Soucek concerns
In the heart of West Ham United’s midfield, Tomas Soucek has emerged as a linchpin for David Moyes’ side. His commanding presence and consistent form have made him a vital cog in the team’s mechanics. However, recent concerns have arisen regarding Soucek’s stamina and potential fatigue due to an excessive number of matches.
Following The Hammers 2-0 victory over Sheffield United, Moyes hinted at the toll that a packed schedule may be taking on Soucek. The towering midfielder has been a key player for both West Ham and the Czech Republic national team, leaving him with very little time for rest and recuperation. Moyes subtly expressed his worry about Soucek potentially reaching a point of exhaustion.
The Hammers opted to rest several players during the midweek Carabao Cup game, but Soucek was among the exceptions, featuring in both matches. Moyes acknowledged the toll the midweek League Cup game might have had on the players, especially Soucek, who played a full part in both encounters. The manager noted a dip in energy levels during the second half of the match against Sheffield United, suggesting that the midweek fixture had left its mark.
Big Sou’s workload
While Moyes refrained from singling out Soucek, it’s evident that the manager had the resilient midfielder in mind. Soucek’s dedication to both club and country is undeniable, but it also raises concerns about burnout and potential injuries. Moyes and his team must carefully manage Soucek’s workload to ensure his long-term sustainability and effectiveness in the squad.
It has come as a bit of a surprise to see Soucek force his way into such an integral position. However, the big Czech has been just as important as James Ward Prowse, Lucas Paqueta and Edson Alvarez this season.
