Reports are emerging that West Ham defender Ben Johnson has been offered a new contract at the club, believed to be for 5 years.

Claret & Hugh broke the news last week that Julen Lopetegui was keen to retain Johnson, and the club has remained in dialogue with the player. This was confirmed by our top source at the club, whom we reached out to for comment this afternoon.

The versatile defender was on his way out of the club following years of being overlooked by previous manager David Moyes. However, it now appears that new head coach Lopetegui sees a long-term future for Academy star Johnson, who has been at the club since the age of 8.

New manager may see something in him that moyes never like playing him in right position onwards and upwards

Good to sign him up on a new contract. Now we might be able to sell him for a few quid.

    Average standard Championship player. Ridiculous

5 years, we never learn. Bang average premier player, if he was in such demand he would have gone.
Probably found out we are the only ones to offer a contract like that, if true…

He’s a useful squad player as he can cover a number of positions but I don’t see him as being a first eleven starter in any position. As another poster has pointed out on a contract he has a value, he’s not completely unsaleable unless he’s not given a new contract. Also fills one of the home grown slots. It’s a sensible decision to keep him, can always reappraise at leisure.

No new contract, walks next month for nothing.
New contract we sell next year for a few million

Johnson is not and never will be a Quality Premiership player. He has been given plenty of chances to Shine. It appears we are now stuck with him.
