New look West Ham United | Mission accomplished as first goal already achieved

The familiar expression “May you live in interesting times” –  broadly attributed to being a translation of a Chinese curse, in fact, could be deemed especially appropriate for West Ham United’s employees, shareholders, players and estimated four million world wide fans ever since relegation was confirmed just three short weeks ago.

“Interesting’ indeed for shareholders who were apparently only told within the last week of the safeguarding issues for their own Chairman that were in place at West Ham dating back to 2023 … One can only wonder at the atmosphere in the boardroom when that news broke. As if the allegations within the Panorama programme were not trouble enough, causing main sponsor Boyle Sports to start asking serious questions.

“Interesting” indeed for fans, 99% of whom will be celebrating – as are we – the demise of the Brady – Sullivan era. Whatever your opinion on the move from Upton Park to Stratford, the culture around the club has been toxic, the business management dreadful and the hundreds of millions of debt racked up largely by knee-jerk transfer purchases, hugely expensive payday loans and poor decision making had placed the club in a perilous situation even before the allegations over David Sullivan’s past finally made it into the public domain.

However.

Within just seven days, the new look West Ham United board has taken some pretty huge steps to distance itself from the Sullivan – Brady era. Look again at the joint statement made today, deep within it comes welcome confirmation:

“Our goal is to stabilise West Ham United, retain as many of our key players as possible and, under the management of Nuno Espírito Santo, secure an immediate return to the Premier League. We are also committed to engaging with our fans and all business partners to build a stronger future for our Club. We have already taken concrete steps toward this goal.”

Mission accomplished on that first task: Stability looks assured, with no mass player sell- offs this summer. Keeping Nuno at the club now looks a decisive act of shrewd leadership. The Portuguese manager is more likely to keep continuity on the pitch and several ‘key players’ within the squad.

A pretty impressive beginning to the brave new world at London Stadium. Like most fans I’m genuinely excited to see how this pans out. Of course, players will still be sold following relegation. But at least the club’s leaders  are now behind their manager in their aim of securing an immediate return to the Premier League rather than flogging off what remains of the family silver just to pay the debt.

Don’t you just know those season ticket sales will be through the roof now. “Interesting times” indeed at West Ham United.
