West Ham United‘s defensive frailties were laid bare in their opening day defeat to Aston Villa. While there were positive aspects to the performance, particularly from Max Kilman, the team’s vulnerability to pace and crosses was evident.
The introduction of Jhon Duran and Ian Maatsen highlighted the defensive shortcomings, with Mavropanos struggling to cope with the physicality and pace of the Villa attackers. The full-backs were also exposed, with Coufal unable to contain Maatsen’s runs.
I was surprised to see both Coufal and Mavropanos from the start and was hoping that new signings Todibo and Wan-Bissaka would start to sure up the defence. When they do eventually start, which they surely will at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace on Saturday, the Hammers defence could show significant improvement straight away.
The new signings bring a higher level of defensive ability and experience, which could address the issues exposed against Villa.
However, it’s important to note that building a solid defence takes time. The team will need to work on defensive organisation, communication, and individual performances to improve their overall defensive solidity. Let’s be fair, the defence were awful last season and some concerns remain, the overhaul can’t be completed quickly enough.
Against Villa the defence had a day off back line was at least a yard of the pace ….
Get AWB fit get him playing … let’s see if he is as good as they say …… get that money off the bench and on the field
The defence was a yard to slow against AV
Let’s see if AWB is as good as they say
Get the money off the bench and on the field
