Newcastle ponder Carroll swap deal

Newcastle United are reportedly considering a swap deal for Jonjo Shelvey with Hammer Andy Carroll moving in the opposite direction.

The unlikely swaps dealr repeated by the Daily Express today was considered the kind of silly story that does the rounds this time of year but further investigation suggests there could be actually something in it.

But a senior Hammers source refused to rubbish the story completely and instead said “I can’t see Newcastle agreeing that deal”

Carroll left Newcastle in January 2011 to join Liverpool for a record transfer fee of the time of £35m, later joining West Ham on loan in 2012 which became permanent in 2013 for £17m on £85,000 per week.  Carroll’s five-year contract comes to an end this summer.

Shelvey joined Newcastle in 2016  on a five-and-a-half-year deal, for a reported fee of £12 million. He has made nine appearances this season for the Magpies.

However, the Hammers would probably find it impossible to do a deal with Newcastle still flirting with the bottom of the table positions.

  1. Just out of interest Sean, because I know you like to add on fees etc to your transfer finance related articles. Carroll is widely reported as a £2 milllion loan deal 2012 followed by permanent signing for £15 million in 2013. Is that how you arrive at the figure of £17 million? Or are you including add on fees?

  2. I think it depends on Ashley if he can make a few quid out of it, Rafa is in his last year and he is unlikely to renew his contract so whatever happens I think he will do his best, if he were to be provided with an additional excuse as to why the team got relegated he might see it as an opportunity.

  3. No brainer , Shelvy lost a bit of direction of late his statistics show that under our management team he will thrive.
He will also give Noble competition for most Red /Yellow cards in a season ☺

  4. In a heartbeat

  5. Carroll for Shelvey. Geordie for Cockney. Seems very convenient. I think AC bought a house in Newcastle a year or two back. We are probably more in need of goals from midfield than we are from goals from forwards at this moment in time. Shelvey used to score regularly. If Pellegrini could fire him up again a swap deal would make sense on many levels. However I think AC is settled In Essex these days.

  6. Don’t see this happening.

Carroll only has 6 months left, so we will still need to pay a considerable amount for Shelvely. Money we don’t have for January.

Then you have to get Newcastle to agree, so i see the the whole think as very unlikely to happen.

But would be good if it did.

  7. Disregard Carroll at your peril . If west ham palm him off to a Premiership rival ,, beware .
He would and could haunt us . Why not let him get match fit and return to his best instead of Bashing him . Yes “ bashing him “ .
