Ten Games In | Time For A few Home Truths

Julen Lopetegui has nowhere to hide, no-one to blame. Not even the rash, dumb sending off of Edson Alvarez before half time. If the head coach comes out and blames ‘playing with ten men’ for our embarrassing defeat against Nottingham Forest, I have news for him. We’d still have lost with eleven men.

With his ‘system’, probably we’d have lost with twelve.

The weekly puzzling change of tactics and formation. Rushed changes at half time after West Ham go behind again and again. Here is a manager, head coach, call him what you like, who thinks the Premier League is easy. The expressions on the players faces and the lack of discipline on the pitch – three could have been red-carded today – say it all: Lopetegui has already lost the dressing room.

This group of players must feel humiliated after todays’ performance but – Alvarez notwithstanding, I wouldn’t blame the team : Jarrod Bowen, Crysencio Summerville, Lucas Paquetá, Mohammed Kudus, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jean Clair Todibo and Max Kilman have the attributes to be the ‘spine’ of a very successful team.

Week by week they are having their ability coached out of them by a kind of football Don Quijote, running the players around in different styles and random formations in a chaotic search for some peculiar mythical footballing windmill but just discovering week by week that there is no room in the Premier League for such rash experimental eccentricity.

He claimed to have been studying West Ham for months when he was interviewed by the board. Maybe his tactics worked on Playstation FIFA 24 but in the real world he has been found out.

Maybe Lopetegui’s strategy will work on a Playstation

Other teams are too good to allow Lopetegui to ‘experiment’ four months into the role. Said experiments illustrated this week by having Antonio pop up at right back, Todibo suddenly appear playing as an inside-right and Summerville today – in his first start – stationed in some kind of midfielder no-mans land.

It’s brainless. And it’s failing. and it isn’t going to get better. This is it.

Time for him and others at the club to consider right now, today- not at Christmas- does he really have what it takes to coach this Premier League club?

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970.. 'Football is Life' oh yes. Let it raise your spirit but never darken your mood. Life's too short not to enjoy the journey with our Claret and Blue heroes n' villains.

    Get Frank in from Brentford

  • Jon says:

Typical call yourself West Ham fans my dad took me to my 1st match aged 7 years old ,I’m now 58 and have supported West Ham for most of my life, yes moyes football became boring to watch but look at us now. He has no f xxxxxg clue Probably 50% wanted moyes out well you got what you wished for well done all of you GET OVER IT !!!

    • FredK says:

Don’t know what the time spent supporting West Ham has to do with it but as an 8 year old I have been supporting the Hammers since 1964, it don’t make me any more loyal or savvy than the next guy but what it does tell me is that I’ve seen enough to tell me that Moyes needed to go and our current manager is the wrong choice. All this talk about getting what you asked for is laughable. What any true West Ham supporter wanted was a manager who could mould a decent group of players into a formidable team. We need to do a Man U and cut our losses….again. Edin Terzic springs to mind.

  • Dan says:

Possibly the poorest manager we have ever seen (and that is saying something!)
Not one single positive to name since his appointment, shouldn’t even be a discussion if our club was being run properly, what a shambles….

    • Matt says:

I agree! AC Milan kicked off when he was linked to them. We all knew he wouldn’t be the guy to take us forward, let alone play a more exciting brand of football.

Sully has to stop being stubborn, realise he made another massive error and P45 JL. Attendances will soon drop if JL stays as who in their right mind wants to watch this garbage 🤷‍♂️

    • Andy Stone says:

It’s hard to imagine having a coach/manager worse than Avram Grant but in that department Lopetegui is showing Avram a thing or two.

  • Bill says:

Been a supporter for over 70 years and have never seen such rubbish ( although I probably have). A clueless manager, players looking lost and played out of position. Time for a change.

  • Alex says:

Not all fans wanted Moyes out. Those of you that did should be ashamed of yourselves. And please say who you want in instead. J-Lo Steinden have squandered a fortune on 2nd rate players. Playing Thursday and Sunday last season with a small squad was always going to take it’s toll towards the end. Of course Moyes wasn’t perfect but he won a European trophy. Arsenal haven’t done that for 30 years, Spurs for 40 years. We are now heading for relegation. Thanks for nothing you brainless idiots who wanted Moyes out.

    • Matt says:

      Moyes had to go!

The only problem was Sully picking the next manager to replace him.

Sully has wasted way more money than Tim. JL should be sacked now! Get in Edin who knows the club so we at least can swerve the drop and have a go at the FA Cup!

We played dire football under Moyes and now it’s got even worse.

Bet you liked Allardyce too 🤣🤣

    • FredK says:

Hyping up Moyes by comparing him to Jlo is a simple enough task.Moyes brand of football was dire and dated,he had to go. Only one brainless idiot here.

    • Alan says:

Why are you talking about Moyes? Even he himself has been on various podcasts and said it was the right time to part ways. Moyes said was offered a contract and turned it down.

As for who we wanted, well Amorim when he was linked. The guy at Brighton was reportedly also on Steidten’s list. I don’t know of a single fan who wanted Lopetegui.

You are conflating two separate issues. On the one hand it was the right time for Moyes to go BUT the appointment that followed was all wrong. I think you might be the brainless idiot if you can’t see that.

    • Andy Stone says:

The be careful what you wish for brigade have something in common which is wealth. In their eyes it’s okay for working class people pay their money to be entertained and excited following their team and be short changed with the most turgid offering in return. To them it’s more important to support their also wealthy mate because to them the fans don’t matter.
If the result is all that matters I’m comfortable with turning my back on it. I can find plenty of other equally boring options to fill match day that are free of cost.
Now didn’t Moyes get offered a Head Coach contract? Oh yes that’s right but of course he’d have to have relinquished the control of wasting money.

      • Fredk says:

Couldn’t agree more. These pundits cover each others back. Fans spend good money to be entertained, no one, except if you are a Man U fan, expect to win every week. Then to aim the careful what you wish for jibe at fans is just a cheap shot. They are totally out of touch.

    • FredK says:

Total BS. Maybe Arsenal and Spurs haven’t won anything in Europe for decades but both of them look like they have a vision, both of them play attractive football. We escape relegation and win one trophy in 40 odd years and we should be grateful for Moyes? What a load of twaddle.

    • rollercoaster hammer says:

sadder than the rest of us, are you? trying to explain that this guy is crap by pretending that Moyes was our only hope is blinkered and pathetic. neither are suitable, especially for the players we have. and you’re thanking those of us who wanted him gone like WE sat him down and told him he had to go. pure genius, you are. if you can’t see that it was “thank you but goodbye” time for Moyes then i’d suggest a clean mirror if you’re looking to call out brainless idiots

      • rollercoaster hammer says:

        * addressed to Alex the brainless idiot
don’t know why my comments sometimes aren’t posted under the comment i’m replying to

  • Stevey c says:

Never wanted him from the start, while we have Sullivan we were never going to get Amorim.champions league football they said!!! This is a championship manager at best.we seriously have a good team.coyi⚒

  • Pongo says:

Any other manager would be better than this jackass, I personally think the, way he has gone about this role proves his totally clueless or maybe he has a, cunning plan and that he hates West ham so much he thought I will get this job and get them relegated.

  • Haytham alyassin says:

The day they announced that J LO is out coach and watching the pre season games I knew that we will have a miserable season.. it’s not too late fire the b@@@@@@ , he couldn’t do it at wolves he definitely won’t be able to do it with us … Rafa Benitez will do better than this idiot if you bring CASSAS the Iraqi national team coach he will do better

    • Alan says:

Rafa Benitez is exactly who I’d expect to Sullivan to bring in…assuming he’s unemployed that is.

  • FredK says:

I believe in being patient with a manager especially when he has so many new players. However I would expect some sort of identity to have been developed 10 games in and there isn’t one. We have an excellent squad, maybe a player short in the midfield dynamic position and a pacy centre forward but there is no cohesion, nothing that seems to suggest a team in the making so yes I am concerned and I really do think we should be admitting to making a mistake and bring in a new manager. Edin Terzic is my choice.

  • ricardo says:

First half signs were that West Ham did ok possession-wise, but it was a very unproductive possession, completely lacking surprise. And it rarely lead to attacks, as shown by the “10 to 1 touches in the opposite box” figure given right after the score opening. If it wasn’t working for WHU with 11 men, there was little hope after we went down to 10 men.

  • AlansDevonshireCream says:

Edin Terzic is out of contract and still available…..maybe get him now before it gets any worse. Watching J-Lo jumping around on the touchline like an idiot while probably screaming at his players (probably in Spanish) isn’t a good look! The reality is that either the players haven’t bought in to what he is trying to do, or they know the systems he is trying to play is causing more problems than it is solving. Get rid now before it gets any worse!

    • Matt says:

Once again I’m in total agreement with you Alan! Edin is exactly the kind of manager we need. Young, progressive, inspiring and he knows the club.

Sully should be nowhere near the interview process! Really hope Kresinsky buys him out so we can ditch him & Brady asap

  • Jboy says:

It’s over…I’m done…I was finished at Chelsea tbh …When OWB was so far up the park allowing Jackson the time to dance in to our box ..No pun intended…
Today he started with 5 defenders…The message to Nunos boys was simple…Come and have a go …They did …
There is only one answer…I’m hoping I will wake up tomorrow and it’s all been a bad dream.

  • John Ayris says:

It’s certainly not working, he’s getting way less out of the team than their potential. We’re into November now, one way or another this cannot continue into the new year…

  • R B K says:

I hope he will the first manger to be fired by 2 seperate clubs before he has managed 15 games .
Lopetigui should have a little self pride and resign before that eventuality .

  • Kip says:

Is something going to be done about this until.itd to late..its so obvious to see this bloke has no clue whatsoever….the man u win was complete luck as we know ..
    DO SOMETHING NOW .
    T. HE HONESTLY HAS NO CLUE

  • David Moyes says:

Sack the Manager whilst your there Sullivan please do everyone the biggest favour and sack yourself….
Could’ve had Rubin Amorim but didn’t want to spend any compensation money for him…Wow…we will never be a top club as long as Sullivan is pulling the strings, everything is always on the cheap, well it’s showing now and the only place we are going is to the Championship with this useless manager and board

  • Andy Stone says:

I can’t be asked to point out the issues again. I called it a few weeks ago that this fool doesn’t have the required ability to manage or coach a Premier League team. Getting imaginative with the formation etc when the basics are nowhere to be seen is a sackable offence. He is either one or possibly both, arrogant and stupid.

  • Alan says:

That’s what you get when you go with the cheap option. Not like there were a queue of clubs competing for his signature.

  • Andy ⚒ says:

Let’s not forget this was Sullivans pick .

  • Biddlybong says:

One home truth is we’re 10 games in, not 9. But to hell with the details

    • Glenn says:

I’m an armchair supporter. This is already the 4th or 5th match I’ve switched off because we have been f**king dreadful. God forbid what those poor blighters who go to the matches are going through. Thank you guys, geographically I can’t fall on the same sword. This was atrocious. If any representative of the boards reads MESSAGE boards, please I BEG YOU, MY FAMILY BEGS YOU, I THINK NEARLY ALL OTHER FANS BEG YOU, GET RID OF THIS MANAGER

  • Ian prior says:

He doesn’t know his best eleven, he plays everyone out of there best position, his lost the dressing room, players will be cueing up to leave. We are in serious trouble, we’ll doen Sullivan this is on you.

  • Trevsheadwonthecup says:

The biggest home truth is . Neither the owner or the manager are up to it .

    • Trevsheadwonthecup says:

A chairman that constantly shifts the blame elsewhere. Is a recipe for disaster. Especially in the premier League of . 2024 .

    • Paul Rees says:

No west ham fans this is not on David Sullivans hands, this is on you, the minority wanted David Moyes out when there was absolutely no need for that knee jurk reaction, Alan Shearer called it correctly, be very careful what you wish for!!!!
As for Rafa Bdnitez just ask Everton fans if they would have him back, voted in bottom 5 mangers of all time at Goodison Park
Its Moyes you need back at London stadium

      • Clacton Rd Iron says:

You are totally wrong – David Moyes was a terrible manager who should have gone much sooner than he did.
David Moyes played at the City Ground twice, lost twice and never scored. Last season under Moyes we lost 5 -0 at Fulham – 1 – 1 this season, and 5 – 2 at Crystal Palace –
        2 – 0 win this.
Yes JL is an appalling appointment – Inter Milan and West Ham fans both petitioned for him not to be appointed and this is 100% Sullivan’s fault – end of

      • Matt says:

You and Sully are the idiots!

Moyes league form was atrocious and every manager has a point where they’ve taken the team as far as they can.

Moyes stayed one season too long! The rebuild of the squad wouldn’t have been as painful if this had happened with a coach that could work in tandem with Tim

    • Matt says:
