No Nonsense David Moyes is absolutely right to take his time with his decision on Jesse Lingard’s future. In fact the situation is a complete switch from a time when the manager was forced to wait on a decision from Lingard.
West Ham’s pursuit of the former Manchester United player was not a good look. Lingard had done remarkably well during his loan stint in East London. As a result a permanent move to the Hammers seemed like the natural progression.
Jesse was unwanted in Manchester, and very much coveted by Moyes. However, interest from the Hammers appeared to be used as leverage to get a new contract at Old Trafford. Nothing wrong with that of course, Lingard is a Manchester boy and United is his club.
Unfortunately the charade which ensued when it was clear Lingard was leaving Manchester, was unedifying to say the least. It appeared from the outside as if Jesse wanted to move anywhere BUT West Ham. All the while David Moyes was doing an excellent impression of the orphan Oliver begging for more.
Moyes takes charge
To use another analogy . . . Moyes looked like the jilted lover unable reconcile that things were over. The manager seemed to be the last person to realise Lingard wasn’t going to sign. In the end everyone looked a bit silly and Lingard signed for Nottingham Forest.
With that in mind, it’s fantastic to see Moyes now calling the shots. The tables have turned and West Ham probably need Lingard far less than he needs us.
I’m not suggesting for a moment that Moyes should cut his nose off to spite his face. However, he does have the luxury of time with a trophy in the cabinet and the Hammers flying high.
There was a time when Lingard would have walked into the West Ham first team as one of the best players. That is no longer the case. And if David Moyes has decide further evaluation is required before making a decision . . . he’s earnt the right to dither away at his leisure.
The reason Moyes wants Lingard is because he is better than Benrahma and offers us something we are missing, I like Benny as a man and a player but he is inconsistent, for some reason Fornals seems to be on the way out and we also have AFCON so will be losing Benny for 6 weeks which makes Lingard more of a no brainer. If we had signed Ekitike we probably wouldn’t be signing Lingard but we didn’t so here we are.
