The transfer window may be shut—but West Ham are still hard at work, snapping up emerging talent for the future.

The Club have officially confirmed the signing of 19-year-old French defender Dimitri Colau from newly-promoted Ligue 1 outfit Paris FC. The highly-rated centre-back has joined the Hammers’ U21 development squad on a four-year deal, with an option for a fifth.

Colau now links up with his former Paris FC Academy teammate Mohamadou Kanté, who signed for West Ham in August 2024. The pair were close during their time in the French capital, and Colau revealed that Kanté played a big role in encouraging the move.

“Mo and I have been teammates throughout our time with the Paris FC Academy,” Colau said.
“He spoke very highly of how he’d been welcomed in, the facilities, and the quality of the training sessions. I’m really excited to be here and can’t wait to get started.”

Kanté has already made waves in East London, scoring twice for the development side and putting in a string of powerhouse performances in midfield. His mix of strength, speed and physicality has even led some to call for a fast-tracked promotion to Graham Potter’s first-team squad.

If Colau is cut from the same cloth, then West Ham may well have unearthed another gem. The continued investment in youth players is a promising sign that the Hammers are building a future as well as a present—and with Kyle Macaulay and the analytics team heavily involved in recruitment, don’t be surprised if more unknown names arrive in the coming months.

It’s a smart, quiet bit of business—and exactly the sort of long-term thinking the club needs.

What’s the point? We have a column of youth waiting to be given a chance.
They never get a run in the side for consistency, most other clubs are trusting their youth.
Are we waiting until they are 29 to play them.

Meanwhile, £3 Billion has been spent on players in this transfer window. The football world has gone mad!

So true a few of the clubs splash the cash then two years down the line have to walk a very fine line so they don’t get fined or points deducted. You will see more of clubs being at the top end for two years followed by a swift fall as they balance the books unless the club is run extremely well.

This is a good example of the way forward: young, emerging talent at a low cost. Let’s hope this pans out well in the future. Furthermore it’s good that Kante – another potentially very good buy that went under the radar – spoke highly of West Ham to him.
