Now We Know Why Exceptional Signing Cost £50M

Aaron Wan-Bissaka wasn’t the most high-profile signing of the summer when West Ham were credited with having “won the transfer window.”

In many respects, the full-back’s signing flew under the radar, with many, like myself, hoping the club could pull off the transfer of Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters.

Wan-Bissaka had gained a reputation as being the best one-on-one defender in the Premier League. AWB was viewed as a safe defensive choice but was deemed to be limited in attack, hence the preference from many for Walker-Peters.

However, reputation could not have been further from reality because it seems Obi-Wan really does have the lot. With two goals of his own and involvement in a few others, the Hammers’ £15m man has shown his versatility both positionally and in terms of skills.

One also has to credit the new West Ham signing with a tremendous work ethic and will to win. There are a number of players in the current Hammers squad who were struggling badly under former boss Julen Lopetegui—to such an extent that a few are undergoing something of a metamorphosis under new gaffer Graham Potter.

That is not something that can be said for Wan-Bissaka, though. His performances have been at the top level all season, irrespective of who was in charge of the team or whether West Ham were struggling or thriving.

Man U broke the bank for Wan Bissaka

Manchester United paid £50M

His level of performance should come as little surprise. After all, Manchester United were impressed enough to pay £50 million to sign the player from Crystal Palace.

The fact that he was never correctly utilised at Old Trafford probably says more about the current state of Man U than it does about the player.

Wan-Bissaka is now beginning to look like an absolute steal for the £15m price that West Ham paid for him. We are the beneficiaries of the fact that he has already dipped his toe into the water at a big club and is probably now happy to be playing regular first-team football.

In many respects, there are parallels to his old pal Wilfried Zaha, who returned to south London after a failed transfer to the Red Devils. Zaha was a sensation during his second stint at Palace, and I suspect we’re witnessing precisely the same from AWB.

The defender has a real opportunity to establish himself as something of an Irons cult hero, and whisper it quietly, he’s looking pretty good as an early contender for Hammer of the Year

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

Started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

Give West Ham opinions on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus.

Sometimes feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

Absolutely agree! The best our summer signing! Pure luck to have him in our team for ridiculous price!

  • Fisky says:

Absolute bargain. One of my favourite players. So versatile, so strong, skilful and his sliding tackles are something else. I’ve noticed other players copying some of his moves so I think he’s been doing 1 to 1 training sessions. Defo Top Boy and a proper Hammer. Already has my vote for player of the season ⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️

Took 2 years to sign him started with dithering Moyes era but was worth the wait.
Surprised been no mention of KWP (Southampton) as his transfer bounced back and forth between the two of them.
He’s out of contract this year and at £8m would seem ideal replacement for either Coufal or Cresswell.
£40m buys Ferguson or Boniface. No contest, Boniface (better than Duran) is definitely best option.
How long did it take Sully to get rid of JLo? No way is he going to make any strategic moves when he’s only got a month (well 4 days).
Forget this transfer period and start list for summer due to amount of time it takes whu.

  • Selsdonhammer says:

At the moment no-one is even close to him as the potential Hammer of the Year.

  • Mark says:

Without doubt the best transfer of the summer

  • John Ayris says:

Yes all credit due to Steidten who even feigned interest in Masrauoui in order to speed Man U up.
