JARROD BOWEN came in for some criticism over his ‘passive onlooker’ role as the Lucas Paquetá double yellow fiasco unfolded against Liverpool. As West Ham’s captain many, including several at Claret and Hugh felt Bowen should have been far more forceful in removing the Brazilian from the ref’s radar after he argued his way into the first card.

It is not a criticism of Bowen the player, who every West Ham fan loves – simply a recognition that he’s never going to be a ‘blood and thunder’ skipper, quick to bawl out his team mates nor get in their ear if they fail to perform. It’s just not in his DNA.

Nuno has made his own opinion of his West Ham captain crystal clear and come out 100% in support of Bowen, offering a thinly veiled rebuke to those of us who have been wondering whether Bowen’s tenure is detracting from his own game too.

Nuno’s words are a show of support for West Ham’s captain

In his pre- Brighton press conference, Espírito Santo went out of his way to underline his position on Bowen and the armband:

And I will say I’m very pleased with the work of Jarrod,” Sky Sports’ reported Nuno’s words:. We are very happy to have him as a captain. He leads by example and he did an amazing game”.

It is a mark of the man, in fact, if his performances have been impacted by the club’s struggles in recent months. Who wouldn’t be weighed down by having to work under four different managers in a year and a half and now mired in a relegation-zone crisis. However, if Nuno feels that Bowen is the man for the job, that’s good enough for me.

A couple of goals to celebrate Bowen’s return to form would be perfect this weekend. He did look pretty cream crackered by the end of the Old Trafford draw – three days recovery is far from ideal and no Crysencio Summerville again puts pressure on Bowen to lead the attack alone. In the last week Bowen has had to endure the downside of the responsibilities associated with being West Ham’s skipper: An upside would be as welcome for us as for the Hammers’ legend himself.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Agee Bowen is no captain I’m afraid nice guy, good footballer but no captain, and Martin, Nuno opinion ain’t worth a light as he continues to play that waste of space Pagueta at the expense of other players
Add Nolan to the names of proper csptains

He runs himself into the ground every match like Soucek under David Moyes with no respite + international duties and both train hard already.

I’m sure he is the type to learn how to cope and handle these new responsibilities and he’ll learn from the Paqueta incident. The problem is not him or his style, only that he is out on the right wing and there were no organisers in defence or midfield during a match under Potter & Lopetegui.

This has already changed under NES with Todibo and Dinos (also Areola) all being vocal, pointing and organising in defence. Now everyone is talking, high-fiving etc.. Never used to see any reaction to a good block or Areola save. If Potts and Fernandes do the same in midfield all good – maybe one becomes a vice-captain in the future, planning ahead? If say Magassa goes forward another covers, but frankly they all seem to be doing it already – so no problems anymore.

Keeping Bowen as captain is fine, the players like him. It’s all changed out on the pitch now.

Sorry Bowen ain’t no captain. Noble was , bonds definitely was , Alvarez could have been.

Agree, but none of the squad are of captain quality. It’s a generation thing too. An old fashioned captain like Noble would be complained about by a new generation brought up to think criticism destroys mental health. Mixed with arrogance it’s a potent mix for failure.

Totally agree, this is a great point, I see it everywhere and not just football.
Men, boys have had everything sucked out of them from the education system and how one sided it is and they are being left behind.
