The US – originated series ‘Ted Lasso’ – which proved hugely popular with non-football audiences in the UK – provided the inspiration and proved that life is stranger than fiction as Nuno seemingly borrowed an idea from the series to motivate his Hammers squad yesterday.

The fictional comedy features a US coach drafted into the English Premier League with varying degrees of success and failure: His ‘BELIEVE” poster taped to the wall above the changing room door ended up being central to several of the stories.

Hammers coach uses images of the squad to motivate

It was El Hadji-Malick Diouf’s “instagram stories” post that gave the game away: Nuno’s motivational mood-changer for the players apparently consisted of a giant image containing pictures of every squad member when they were children onto the wall.

Presumably in a bid to make them super proud of what they’ve become and the dream they’ve made possible through their own hard work, the Portuguese head coach evidently tapped into a rich vein of pride amongst the squad as the Irons’ side played with passion, pride and spirit:

Three qualities which had been sadly lacking from the West Ham eleven for so long that fans hardly recognised the fighting qualities displayed to come back and win after going behind. Most would have been like me and feared the worst after going behind. Having their penalty award overturned by VAR and conceding just after hitting the post, it seemed that luck would be on Newcastle’s side.

It could indeed  have been ‘believe’ written large on the wall for the effect it had. A few more performances of that ilk and London Stadium fans will start to believe themselves.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Nuno Lasso definitely got a tune out of our players who finally looked good in a proper team performance. Some good fighting spirit got us a long overdue home win. It makes us fans proud to be Hammers!

At Everton our line up was Areola, KWP, Mavropanos, Kilman, Diouf, Magassa Fernandes, Paqueta, Bowen, Summerville, Fullkrug. That team competed and picked up a point.

Yesterday v Newcastle Areola, AWB, Kilman, Todibo, Diouf, Fernandes, Potts, Paqueta, Bowen, Summerville, Wilson.

So AWB for KWP was due to AWB injured at that time, Todibo for Mavropanos is due to Maveropanos injured now, Potts for Magassa is a genuine change. Wilson for Fulkrug is due to Fulkrug injured now.

It’s very clear what a performing line up looks like within who is injured. A line up that looks something like either of these is good enough to be middling.
