Following the first win at home since February, it would be fair to say that fans have been in a buoyant, upbeat mood for the first time having seen their side come back from a goal down to beat Newcastle United: The Hammers haven’t come back from behind to win in seemingly forever (I’ sure someone far more resourceful than I will go and fact check..)

So a flavour of readers’ comments is a good way to draw a line under the marvellous events of yesterday before the focus moves forward to the ‘six pointer’ against Burnley next Saturday.

Subject: Todibo’s turnaround – Guest comment by Hameroo

“Seeing Kilman gallivanting upfield without a leash made me wince but Todibo’s surprisingly excellent performance gave me some reassurance. I think that’s the best I have seen Todibo play for us so far. And long may it continue! There was much to admire throughout a very good team effort against Newcastle.”

Subject:  Beating Newcastle –  Guest comment by Rossi

“I turned it off after they scored!”…

Lucky our players are not as soft spirited as me. I watched Bowen’s torpedo crash off the post and was so disappointed but to see my team capitulate 26 seconds later gutted me. I went straight to the highlights and was so pleased to see the teams result. I’ll be watching without knowing the result next match (I live in Oz) and I want the team to play progressively again but for the defence to lift. We need stability we have to have it.”

Freddie Potts wins praise from C and H readers

Subject: Freddie Potts – Guest comment by Peter WHU

Potts was brilliant and makes the team tick, brings the midfield together with triangle passes and looks forward all the time. We have not had a midfielder who plays like that at WHU for absolutely ages. Everything and more that all the fans have been hoping for. Fernandes at last had time to try and create chances and Paqueta played one of his often seen battling games (not always I know) but as one of 3 good midfielders, so he was not squeezed out of the game either.

Areola punching corners out and Todibo gaining in fitness, strength and willingness (I think). I’m glad those 2 doing better, gaining trust of the manager and playing with purpose. Todibo was fired up on the pitch – never seen that before

Subject – winning! Guest comment by ‘Ian Bishop’

“Best performance for a very long time. And how nice to be feeling so positive at the end of a week end again !!
Potts today was brilliant . After watching so many poor holding midfield players ( yes Alvarez , Rodrigos etc ) we now look like we have finally replaced Rice .
How long have we needed a decent player in that position .
I do hope Potter was watching !
He never gave Potts a chance and should be ashamed of himself !
I thought Wilson was excellent today too …. And I have been one of his biggest critics but PAC man was brilliant today too ….”

Thanks guys for all your comments this weekend. I’ll try and feature a selection after every game so keep ’em coming.

Now we need to keep the positivity up when Burnley come calling next weekend. Come on you IRONS!

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Yes, we played well, but you’re getting ahead of yourself again. I thought Newcastle were very poor and bang average. We caught them on the right day. There is still a long way to go.

On the flip side – maybe Newcastle looked poor and average but if West Ham can play this way week in and week out we might discover that all opposition are poor and average.

If we just sit back and roll over each game, then any club facing us will seem to be good and light years ahead of us.

Really hope that poor opponents is the way to go, Watford.

……. Came from behind to win 6 times in 2023-2024

  • Julian Dean says:

Fact check … last time West Ham came from behind to win in the league was V Luton GW 37 of the 2023-2024 season – a 3-1 Win

  • Mick bering says:

Good performance all round But swapping the two centre backs around was simple and so effective

    • Spindrift says:

Thought Kilman had a really good game. It’s easy to forget that he was Wolves capt during a good spell for them. Even though we paid over the odds, not many Wolves fans seemed to want him to leave.
