Obiang threat to Song deal – the fans react

A big debate is going off over at ClaretandHugh’s facebook group on whether Pedro Obiang will wreck Alex Song’s hopes of a permanent deal.

Word on the Hammers grapevine is that Pedro is now ahead of the Barelona loanee for a starting spot. Here’s some random thoughts from CandH members.

alex-songO Obiang has been so steady…. Clever and hard working

O Obiang certainly looks like a decent player and someone who should keep improving. As for Song, I watched the Norwich game again yesterday and he actually was OK. I think the issue is that him and Noble together just shows us to have a lack of pace. Song does always try to pass the ball forward which I like. However, he certainly has not hit the heights of the beginning of last season.

O I still think Song can come good again. We will need strength in depth next season and he’s well settled here with his kids playing in the academy. He really wants to play for us so I think best reserve judgement until the end of the season.

O I would not give Song a contract as his performances this season have not been particularly inspiring unfortunately, whereas Obiang is improving game on game.

O Keeping Song gives us a much stronger squad. We seem besieged with injuries so strength in depth is key. I guess it will come down to finances at the end of the day. In fairness, to be having the debate on whether we should keep Song or not just shows how far we have come this season.

O We do need Song as he is undoubtedly a class player, let’s not forget he is coming back from ankle surgery and may need a run of games.

O We need all the class players that we can get so that we have a strong squad

O I like Song but as everyone has pointed out, his performances – injury impacted or otherwise – have fallen short of his contribution last season. For me 50k is too much for a squad player and his age is starting to count against him. Obiang with Oxford in the wings seems more logical.

  1. I would have thought it depends on the deal that Barcelona want and the wages that Song expects – Song a good player but he has a poor injury record and his form has been patchy to be generous, it is very doubtful if a deal to sign him would be value for money.

  2. I think Song would add to our squad very nicely but he would have to take a massive pay cut. Keeping Song would also mean that we do not need to scour the markets for another Central midfielder as we would be covered in this area. Obiang for me though gets the nod over Song at the moment so wether Song would be happy to play second, third or fourth choice would again be another matter.
