Opportunity knocks at West Ham | Everything points to career lift-off

As one door closes, another opens, so the saying goes. There is usually an upside to any ‘situation’, sometimes it takes a bit of finding. West Ham will be looking at Crysencio Summerville’s successful surgery with mixed feelings. Great that he’s had the operation but .. three  months after the injury occurred so there’s another four months of rehab before he gets back onto a pitch.

To use another proverb, ‘it is an ill wind that blows nobody any good’ and Summerville’s absence – combined with a ‘99%’ likely sale of Mohammed Kudus – leaves a ‘situation extremely vacant’ on West Ham’s left side.

Tailor made for Luis Guilherme. I’ll bet the Hammers’ manager is very pleased that he blocked Guilherme’s sale in February – but then, it might well have been because of inside knowledge of Summerville’s likely prognosis that the Brazilian winger was kept at the club.

Either way, young Guilherme is about to get a full preseason as the first-in-line left winger: We have seen glimpses of him this year which have been enough to reassure that he is able to step in to Kudus’ boots if the Ghanaian is indeed sold.

About time.

Guilherme has been the model of patience and deserves an opportunity of a run in the team. From Crysencio Summerville’s quoted recovery time, the Brazilian is going to get at least half a dozen games in August to impress. Opportunity knocks!

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Guilherme has been very patient and biding his time.
Some of his comments are showing he could be a whu man as much as academy players.
True is young but has a good grounding from an excellent home academy.
If he can have a good pre season with plenty of playing time it will be a bonus.
Shame he is filling in for Summerville would prefer to see him at mid-attack his preferred position.
Perhaps if he can get Potter’s trust he will be moved when Summerville comes back.
With amount of players being reshuffled or moved on will also make space for him

  • Steve Wells says:

Agreed. Bringing on a very light-footed player ahead of a natural left-footer made no sense.

  • Jimmy says:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again! When the owners start to bring in football men who KNOW football as coaches/managers and not old friends and people who are cheap and can make Mr Sullivan laugh at the interview, “We ain’t going nowhere”!!!

    • Hammeroo says:

Maybe David Sullivan models his organisation on Peckham’s Del Boy. There are so many similarities, Rodney, … er Jimmy!

  • B says:

Let’s not get too carried away with Guilherme.
He’s a just turned 19, probably still adjusting to life/language in a new country, and is far from the finished article.

    • The Artist Formerly known as B says:

      Fair enough.
When I was 19, You’d likely find me down the Ilford Palais, trying to find some unsuspecting Doris, who’d miscalculated her tolerance for Malibu, so I could slip my **** in her.
Not playing Premiership football, with millions watching around the world.

      Give the lad a chance.

  • Dave Ewing says:

What would be good is having two up front, and stop all the negative tippy tappy toe football, passing back to the keeper from the edge of the oppositions box

    • Hammeroo says:

We’ve got the first bit already – Bowen and Kudus have been up front. And that hasn’t quite been enough. I’m afraid the dad’s army of midfielders are not able to find a way forward very quickly so tippy tappy it is. Paqman used to be able to find a pass but unfortuately he’s lost his mojo. Sad.

  • Hammerpete6 says:

I am very frustrated with Potters selections and subs including the inability to defend a lead – do we actually practise anything in training?. But now he has an opportunity to integrate a few young players, so where is Scarles, Casey, Orford, Guilherme in the upcoming games? I would forgive Potter for trying young players rather than old players out of position or Ward-Prowse at all. We are currently the worst form team in the Premier, Mr Potter, grow a pair.

    • Peter whu says:

Any minutes they get now will stand them in good stead for next season be it at WHU, or on loan. Still need to protect them, experienced players around them, … all those obvious things. Anyhow, could n’t agree more with everything you said.

  • Peter whu says:

If we have a forwards coach at WHU this Summer that would be a good investment and would help a lad like Guilherme tremendously, during his formative years in PL football. Rather than only team training with occasional specific forward training. Link up play midfield & forwards too. then drill, drill, drill till they find each other with a pass blindfolded.

then WHU surprises everybody and we have the equivalent of a Vardy, ducking in from the left and scoring goals, WHU top of the league!!!

    Blimey, this coffee’s good

    • Peter whu says:

Actually that is a plea. Please get a forwards coach at WHU this Summer and if Alberto is the next n09 with Fullkrug, seal the deal and start as soon as the Summer break is over.

  • Wallydot ⚒️ says:

I 100% agree. Give Guilherme the chance he deserves. He can’t do any worse than some of the misfits this season!

  • Clueless says:

Yet again we have another manager that talks a good game regarding the youngsters, but does a completely different thing. I was impressed with his first game v Villa when he gave Scarles his full debut. But since then nothing even when he has our team playing so badly. Scarles had a bad time against Salah and hasn’t been seen since which isn’t gonna do his confidence any good whatsoever. The same with Guilherme generally gives him a few minutes the occasional 20 minutes gave him one 45 minute stint but played him in the centre which isn’t his position. I think most fans would be happy to see youngsters given a shot they should have been in the last half a dozen matches as we were never being relegated. It’s been an ideal opportunity that has been squandered.
I know that Sullivan is the biggest problem but this guy is clueless, I don’t know who the answer is and hoped GP would change his master plan but he hasn’t so unless we do well in the last 4 games I think the guy has to go

  • kamir bouchareb st says:

    thank you

  • Kip says:

No chance he hardly gave the boy a go and I bet he would rather play an older more experienced player out of position instead …we needed strikers this season and when fit he didn’t play them . Again rather play bowen out of position instead…where did scarles go as well …him bringing on coufal against Brighton was the main reason we lost imo …
