Payet banned for Europa League clash

payetNew Hammers signing Dimitri Payet will play no part in tonight’s Europa League second round qualifier against Maltese opposition Birkirkara at the Boleyn Ground.

Despite being added to the confirmed UEFA 25 man squad for the second qualfying round, the 28 year old play maker is serving a suspension related to his time with French Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille.

Payet picked up three yellow cards in the domestic league from 35 starts last season. He also received a two-game ban after aiming expletives at the closed door of the match officials’ dressing room following a goalless draw with Lyon, in which Lucas Ocampos’ late strike was deemed not to have crossed the goal-line. This was later reduced to a one match ban on appeal.

  1. Why does a domestic ban affect him playing in a european match.I always thought they were seperate with regards to bans & availability.

  2. I thought the same, but im no expert, lol. But i did think they were seperate as well.Oh well,no Payet tonight then i guess.Such is life 😉

  3. Yep I am not sure either. I don’t think Marseille played in Europa last season so his ban is a mystery as to the reasons why

  4. Yeah, very strange Sean.Never seen a domestic ban effect your european appearances.I dont get it either 😉

  5. This guy smells like trouble!!

    The new Di Canio?? :p

  6. If he scores against Man U like PDC did, I’m OK with that…

    OH…just please DON’T push the referee though…;)

  7. I hope he brings everything Di Canio to the club,
Nothing wrong with a bit of passion,
Just don’t understand why he and Carroll have been put in the squad if they can’t play,

  8. In terms of bans, they are separated in to three categories. Competitive club matches, friendly matches and international. So as his ban was from a previous club in a competitive game. He has to serve that tonight. Tbh best time to do it we should be okay tonight but he will be available going forward.
