Former Hammers defender Ian Pearce has backed Slaven Bilic’s view that the club needs a classy central defender.

ClaretandHugh has regularly reported that this is the new manager’s No 1 priority and Pearce has confirmed that’s a position that needs strengthening.

Now amid reports that Juventus’ Angelo Ogbanna is on his way to the club Pearce has declared: “I think the club need a centre-half and maybe a centre forward and I think you’re away.

He told TalkSport: “I think he’ll know the European market very well and [Julian Dicks] Dicksy will know the domestic market.

“I think he has people like the Chairmen to support him, so if he goes to them and says i want this player, i think they’ll be really supportive with him.

I always liked Ian Pearce nice intelligent footballer and his comments are supportive but a little simplistic about transfer targets

  • Mr Buddy Lurve says:

Agree, Lieutenant Quickdrawovic, but I suspect he still hasn’t shaken the media training he received and therefore takes care to be as non-descript and general as possible…

    • Lt. Quickdrawovic 1st Slavalry C&H Regt says:

On the plus side he didn’t say you know every few words, mind you it’s done Beckham no harm lol

  • stuck on 99 forever says:

Nothing wrong with a simple ex-footballer,its how most get to be pundits, lol,Pearce is an exception to the general rule of thumb though,he is mostly certainly more intelligent than your average Savage 😀

  • bubs says:

We love a defender who can play the ball out from the back,Moore,Bonds Rio Reid Tomkins
Ect,but we also need a ball winner,Ginge is that player at the moment but he does make 2 or 3 errors every game and sometimes they cost us,
Slav is looking for a player from his own mold,
And if we are going to let wing backs IE Cresswell attack we need cover,

  • stuck on 99 forever says:

I think we need a man who can bring the ball out from defence, not so much to the level of Rio ofc,but at the moment none of our cbs are comfortable at bringing it out of defence.Slav was one of the most accomplished players with the ball i have seen at centreback for us.Clearly nowhere near the best but alot better than anything we have now.Reid,Tonks,Ginge, none of them are particularly comfortable on the ball, never have been, never will be.

  • Lt. Quickdrawovic 1st Slavalry C&H Regt says:

I think Tonks is the most comfortable on the ball,Reid when on form reads the game the best and Collins is the bravest so we need a combination of all three a hard ginger Maori with a penchant for hitting coppers lol

  • Iron Man says:

If we want a ball winner buy a british defender. If you want someone accomplished on the ball buy a foreign player, lol,we dont need a ball winner,we need a player who can easily bring the ball out with his feet.More chance of Reid,Ginge & Tonks tripping over it if they try coming out of defence with it.They aint the most technically gifted defenders thats are about.Slav will want a ball playing cb imo.

  • Michael Miller says:

Fit, strong, young, athletic players to strengthen the squad and provide more quality and depth – Bilic has got to be given the resources and support he needs to give us what we want!

  • canchaz says:

Been saying this for weeks. This is No: 2 priority for Billic, now he has his midfield strengthened.
An extra striker will be looked at after this need is filled and only after he has a clear picture of the fitness of the ones he’s got, particularly Carroll

  • usain nolan says:

You are just whistling in the wind Canchaz, lol

  • bubs says:

Problem is we are going to have to let players go,
Noble is worth £5 mil Jarvis £4 mil Downing £8 Mil
That will buy you the CH and right Back
You will need another £20 Mil ( will the 2 Davies pay it ) ?
