Goalkeeper Roberto has defied some rather pessimistic expectations since taking over from injured No 1, Lukasz Fabianski.
Even repeat viewings of the first goal against Everton allow elements of forgiveness despite him being beaten at his near post.
With five players inside the box he might have expected better protection but even when the chips were down he appeared to do everything correctly in trying to avert the disaster which saw us go one behind.
He made himself big and spread himself well, yet sadly – as is sometimes the case – there remained a small hole and the team went one down. Truth is the danger should have been averted before it got to that stage
His pre-season did not go down well with many fans and he was almost written off before he had a chance to show what he was all about.
But it now looks as if boss Manuel Pellegrini’s faith in the Spaniard could be rewarded.
Discussing the stopper Pellegini said: “I don’t need for Roberto to make so many saves to demonstrate that he’s a good goalkeeper.
He has a career behind him, we know him perfectly as a goalkeeper, as a professional football player, so as I said before the game I trust him one hundred per cent.”
Glad you do MP..we know he is not in Fabs class and to be fair he made 2 or 3 good saves last week.with a very lame defence in front of him ..he just don’t inspire confidence IMHO.to the team or a sizeable section of our support. .a bit like Darren Randolph imho
Or Mr Hart in the same vein!!
I think we – the fans – need to trust him 100% as well. Even if it is purely to stop the crowd’s anxiety being transferred onto him and putting him under increased pressure. Fabianski isn’t coming back for another month so we need to get behind the 11 men on the pitch. COYI
I agree with that. Anxiety of 60.000 people when a striker rushes through must be felt for a GK. If he has a good save early on I hope our crowd gives him a small name-chant. Will do him, and us, a world of favours!
