Gonzo hands out the marks
Areola:6 Amazing reactions to make an important save after only 5 mins, then called into action again a few minutes later. Had to deal with a couple of long-range efforts. Could have communicated much better for the Aguerd own goal.
Johnson:8 Possibly West Ham’s busiest player in the first half and made a brilliantly timed tackle on Garnacho. Impressive defending on multiple occasions.
Ogbonna:8 Read the game incredibly well and ran from defence to intercept on numerous occasions.
Aguerd:3 Barely noticed him in the first half which I guess is a good thing. Scored an own goal. His poor clearance led to Man U’s 2nd and he lost the ball for their 3rd. Bad day at the office.
Emerson:8 Seemed to get the better of £80m man Antony early in the game. Quick thinking for the Benrahma goal when Man United had gone to sleep. Certainly his best performance at left back.
Rice:7 Continued his good form from the Forest win. Numerous interceptions and driving runs. Led the team really well.
Soucek:8 Licence to get forward again and was unlucky not to score early on. Cleared the ball off the line in the 36th min. Forced De Gea into a save early in the second half. His best game for a while
Paqueta:7 Always looking to create. He’d be transformed with quicker players to pick-out. Linked incredibly well with Benrahma.
Fornals:6 Worked hard but he’s wasted in an attacking position due to his lack of instinct and pace. Shot just wide in the second half. Helped Johnson out where possible.
Benrahma:9 Magnificent ball for Antonio which was unfortunately squandered. Some excellent dribbles and runs caused Dalot problems. Created another good chance for Paqueta. Outstanding in the first half and began the second with a strike of pure finesse to score the opening goal.
Antonio:6 One good cross for Soucek but his technique let him down early on. Missed a wonderful one on one chance to put the Hammers ahead. Wasted another wonderful opportunity to make it 2-0. Amazing energy and work-rate.
Bowen: Replaced Fornals in the 73rd min
Scamacca: 85th min sub for Antonio
I think 3 is a fair rating for Aguerd, decent first 70 min but apalling at the end:
1. Gave away a corner resulting in his own goal
2. Horrible clearance for the 2nd
3. Fumbled away the ball inside out box to give away the 3rd.
The first was just clumsy, the second was a bit pannicky and the third he was completely out of it after the 2 first mistakes.
Better finishing would have most likely secured us victory, but we dropped too deep in the final minutes and look shaky on set pieces first time this season. We had a good game for the most part, so Im not too worried, but we definitly gave away a chance to progress in the cup
Great effort by the players. I thought Areola, Emerson and Benrahma stood out for me. Aguerd did well again unlucky with own goal, not sure a 3 was a fair rating. I really enjoyed the performance and we went for it which was great to see but I thought Moyes decision to leave both Antonio and Soucek on the pitch who were both out on their feet with 20 mins to go was shocking. Soucek was shocking offered absolutely nothing and to leave him on for the full game when we were struggling to possession was insanity by Moyes and cost us the game. Antonio should also have been whipped off much earlier. I believe if Moyes had bade those decisions we would have won the game
