Poll: Striker or bust? Is it the end of the world?

|

SaksullyWest Ham Co-Chairman David Sullivan has indicated it would not be the end of the world if we didn’t sign a world class striker this transfer window as long as we keep hold of the two strikers we have.

Sullivan told Darren Lewis “The problem is every striker you go for, there are 10 others clubs interested in him. So the player is just hanging about looking to get the best deal. I can’t say I blame him.

“I would say to people if we don’t bring anyone in it is not the end of the world as we were the fourth highest scorers in the Premier League last season – and we haven’t lost a striker.

” In a perfect world I would like to think we will bring in a top class striker but we’ve all got limits on what we can pay. I am a little concerned because I’d like to have signed one by now. But it is what it is.”

Do you agree with the Chairman? It wouldn’t be the end of the world if we can’t land our top striker targets.

Interesting how evenly it’s split – obviously not the end of the world and it might be better to stick with what we’ve got and just spend a season of consolidation in our new home before pushing on again next year?

Maybe the lessons learned here are to make sure your targets are deliverable before you name them. Also that until alternatives are secured you do not alienate your existing players. With AC injured looks like we will need both Sakho and Valencia who both now have the message that they are surplus to requirements despite us having know one better secured. Easy to be wise after the event but seems pretty basic…

lol … I have a high opinion of West Ham owners, but in this case, I find the sentence ” if we don’t bring anyone in it is not the end of the world” a bu//#it… Sakho will leave, Valencia will leave, Calamity Andy is Calamity Andy (lol)… ok, we’ve got Martinez and Fletcher, but they represent an open question IMHO… Who will be our striker? Randolph? lol 😉

I think it was a bit naïve of DS to say “we want to spend £25m on a striker, because that will have put agents and clubs on alert. He should have said something along the lines of “we’re looking to improve the squad and bring in some quality”, but spending big money does not necessarily equal quality – look at the bargains Leicester ended up with last season. Surely the best thing would be for Slaven and DS to identify the players that the manager thinks will improve the team (with a range of options to ensure we aren’t suffering from the “eggs in one basket” problem), and then go about things quietly.

In January there are bound to be strikers that will want to move or that are not in Europe but scoring well for their clubs, it is just a question of waiting until we get the right deal at the right price, if we are doing well in Europe and the league players will want to come, if we are not then c’est la vie as Payet might say.

DS has done SO brilliantly in the past, perhaps he just assumed his Midas touch could go on and on…Well, hopefully this is a wake up call.
Nevertheless, there are some great signings; Feghouli looks a handfull. I’m not worrying; I feel the midfielders could ‘pot’ enough…. although I would be v sad if the Master Plan sees Antonio at RB…THAT seems like a phenomenal waste every way you look at it…EXCEPT maybe, if Slav is looking at 3 across the back, with Antonio as a serious wing back…spending most of his time on the attack??? ATTACK: That’s where he’s best…
Antonio is the key to our season; that’s how I see it!
