Poll: Time to forgive and forget Arnautovic?

The deal for Marko Arnautovic to move to China has collapsed for now and West Ham faces the prospect of trying to integrate their striker back into the team for the remainder of the season.

The Hammers rejected a bid from China which would see them net just over £30m on the simple grounds they couldn’t fund a replacement for the same amount in the current transfer window.

Despite the statement from Arnautovic’s brother through TalkSport Manuel Pellegrini has refused to sanction any move this January and claims he dropped him from the squad at the weekend as his head was on other issues.

Although there might be a few twists and turn remaining in this tale Pellegrini, for now, faces the challenge of persuading his top goal scorer to knuckle down, train hard and score some goals for his team he used to kiss the badge and make the crossed Hammers sign.  Arnie must also repair his relationship with his teammates and the supporters if he is to stay until the summer.

In today’s Claret and Hugh poll we ask whether you are prepared to forgive and forget the antics of the Austrian striker assuming he is professional and gets on with the job he is paid handsomely to do.

  1. Betray is the wrong word. He is a player near the end of his career who has been offered a chance to quadruple his wages. We simply need to let him go. Sell him for a decent profit and let’s move on.

  2. The problem is in your last sentence Clive.

  3. We don’t know what family pressure he is under? Perhaps he provides for and feels a duty to parents and siblings? He has said nothing, his brother is doing all the talking. Always thought having a brother as an agent was strange. Does he represent any other players other than Arnie or is he a one trick pony?
There’s little loyalty in football now. The likes of Mark Noble born in Canning Town and proud to put the shirt on every time he plays is a rare thing we will see little of in the future.
If Arnie is not going to buckle down and give a hundred % till the end of the season then he needs to be sidelined if it causes unrest within the rest of the team. Team spirit has been really good this season one player can’t be allowed to spoil it.
I’m sure Pellegrini will know how to deal with the situation.

  4. We paid for him. We are stuck with him. Who does it hurt if we stick him in the u23s? It hurts us as we have nobody to replace him. It hurts the u23s as he will cause unrest there and ruin their great team spirit. Play him. Ask him to be professional and we will let him move at the end of the season. COYI.

  5. I remain non-plussed as to why contracts only commit the club, not the player. If someone drags their feet in training and consequently doesn’t appear in the first team do they not suffer any financial penalty?

Whether you are being headhunted or facing potential redundancy, your best approach is to keep giving 100% to prove you are either worth a greater offer or should be in pole position for retention, respectively. These overpaid ball kickers need to learn some basic lessons in integrity and I hope the club will act as teacher.

  6. This vote is a bit like the brexit vote, it doesn’t give the correct options, we don’t know what the Arnie looks like in a no deal situation.
