News of West Ham United ‘monitoring’ another European striker is hardly an earth-shattering exposé, especially with the Niclas Fullkrug injury highlighting how weak the Hammers options are in attack now.

However, it appears that the player in question was already the subject of a West Ham bid in January ’25. The Hammers, you remember, were linked with failed bids for Jhon Duran and Brian Brobbey before settling on a loan deal for Evan Ferguson – which didn’t work out so well either.

The Porto striker Samu Aghehowa is currently a ‘player of interest’ to both West Ham and Aston Villa whilst Spurs are planning a bid to cover for unfit Dominic Solanke, according to independent transfer expert Ekrem Konur’s twitter/x feed.

With an eye-watering £86 million release clause he’ll most likely not be heading to East London any time soon.

The Hammers did try their luck with a bid in the winter just gone, according to our transfer source close to the club, but perhaps not surprisingly the lowball offer failed:

” We tried to buy him in January, West Ham made a bid that was laughed off by Porto”. ..Another Sullivan special, then.

Somewhere the Irons need to find a front man at an affordable price; of course the January market is a notoriously difficult one with few clubs willing to let their players leave without securing replacements mid-season.

Plus this season it looks like half a dozen sides maybe struggling near the relegation zone and willing to try and spend their way up the table – so competition for anyone likely to score eight or ten goals in the second half of the season will be immense.

Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.
