Graham Potter, long considered the favourite to succeed Julen Lopetegui as West Ham United manager, has dropped to second place in the betting odds. Lopetegui faces mounting pressure after being given two crucial games to save his position following a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at the London Stadium.

The Spaniard narrowly avoided dismissal by securing a vital win against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the Hammers’ hierarchy remains unconvinced. Former Chelsea boss Potter has been waiting in the wings, ready to step in should Lopetegui fail to turn things around.

Until now, Potter appeared the frontrunner, with other potential candidates fading from consideration. However, late yesterday, a surge in betting activity propelled Middlesbrough manager and former West Ham midfielder Michael Carrick to the top of the list. The Hammers academy graduate is now the 2/1 favourite with some bookmakers, relegating Potter to second and Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic to third at 6/1.

Carrick would appear to be the more popular choice among many West Ham fans although Boro’s recent form has not been great. The North East club remain in the play-off places in the EFL Championship.

Just get Potter in. Carrick has no management experience at this level so a high risk appt and based on other exManU players likely will fail.

  • Derek says:

Whist I would love Carrick to return as manager, I believe the task at hand demands somebody with more experience. There is a big jump from Championship to Premiership how many promoted club lose their manager by Christmas. Having said that someone has to give them a chance

  • Ray says:

How many ex-players have gone on to be successful managers of their old club? Is the Carrick model really what WHU needs right now?

    • Steve the hammer collins says:

As much as we all love the history and association Carrick has with our beloved hammers he’s far too inexperienced in my opinion to take on such a massive role

  • Ken Love says:

Potter must still be number one choice for Sullivan as he is available. Middlesborough would demand fairly heavy compensation to release Carrick. I can’t think of any manager Sullivan has paid compensation for. But Carrick and Potter are both right for the club, English, young attack minded coaches.
Sullivan has a terrible record of appointing managers, Grant and Pelligrini to name two
Moyes was probably our best manager in recent times but not a good fit for the club

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

No one is replacing Lopetegui this season, Sullivan despite having skin as thick as a rhino’s hasn’t got the backbone or intelligence required to make a change, look at Avram Grant he waited until we were all but relegated.

    • Mark Painter says:

Make you spot on, the poison dwarf will not sack FLOPPY as long as our premier league status is secure as he wouldn’t want to take the blame as he was the dwarfs pick undermining TIM in the meantime, the man is ruining WHUFC but until he sells his shares we cannot rebuild but let’s hope he doesn’t totally emaciate the club in the meantime.COYI⚒️⚒️⚒️

  • Lee says:

So we can drop another 3 points on Sunday against Man City…….. but let’s give Loppy more time …

Sullivan needs to get a grip ….. the West Ham natives are turning ….. there will be banners wanting him and the board removed ….wont come quick enough

  • Lee says:

Don’t see Carrick as manager .. not enough experience …. But FFS let’s get rid of Loppy …. And start playing some of the academy youngsters

  • Lakesider says:

    Much better option than Potter.

  • Phil Baker says:

Carrick isn’t good enough yet , just look at the amount of games he loses in the Championship . AC Milan just signed Conceicao . He was probably the best unemployed candidate to tick most of Westham’s boxes . AC Milan said NOpetegui then fired Fonseca after half a season and quickly signed a really good coach , Conceicao . The best coaches will be signed quickly now . Perhaps Sullivan’s master plan is to sign Amorim for free after Man United sack him .

As much as we all love the history and association Carrick has with our beloved hammers he’s far too inexperienced in my opinion to take on such a massive role. Just need sullivan to swallow his pride pull the trigger now and send floppy on his way because he’s absolutely killing a club that has massive support that the club really don’t deserve if my love for whu was not so deeply embedded in my soul I’d just stop watching but sullivan knows we are a loyal bunch and he’s really taking the piss now

  • Martin says:

Sorry but i thought Carrick had more connections to Man Utd than to West Ham during his career

  • Darkhorse says:

Potter now Carrick you couldn’t make it up

  • Darkhorse says:

Potter now Carrick you couldn’t make it up.

  • Rob says:

Sullivan won’t sack him yet, it be the same as idiot Moyse 2 more games then another couple of games then still end of season. He is to old and he doesn’t have west ham to his heart like we do, just a business as long as he is making money out of us he don’t care. Potter should have been the manager at least a month ago. Sullivan won’t own up to his mistake of manager he never will.

    • Mr Buddy Lurve says:

Not sure Moyes deserves to be called an ‘idiot’, Rob. He may not have been everyone’s cup of tea as manager, but he did enough to earn a little more respect than that. Have a little class, my friend.

    • Frazer says:

Blimey I didn’t like Moyes style but you cant call him an idiot! He gave us the best time as a supporter In my life time as a hammers supporter

  • Essexirons says:

We’ve just missed out on a big name manager in Sérgio Conceição. Announced as new AC Milan manager yesterday

  • Ghost of Alan says:

Yeah cos Sullivan is really going to pay to get a manager out of a club.

It will be Potter or someone else from the dole queue like it always is. That is IF Sullivan feels he has no choice but to pay off Lopetegui’s contract that is…which as we all know, he will be loathe to do. He also will hate the idea of admitting that he got this appointment wrong. He’d much rather a scenario where he can simply see the contract out as he has done in the past with Moyes and Allardyce rather than have to change. I reckon we probably have to lose the next 4 or 5 before he even considers it. Which conveniently would take us beyond the January window also.

    • John Ayris says:

This is correct. It is likely that we will be losing a series of games in the near future as we have a number of difficult games coming up. Man City, Villa twice, Chelsea, Arsenal. There’s no sign of us reducing the number of chances we allow and these teams are of a quality that they’re unlikely to miss them in any large numbers. The season will be done by then and we may even be in trouble.

    • Bennyboy baker says:

Would love to see carrick become our manager he’s done a great job with Middlesbrough he knows the club and more importantly he knows the fans and what it means to play for West Ham and last but not least he knows the West Ham way he would bring the style of play that most of us fans would love to see our team playing but if potter becomes our next manager I would be happy with that bottom line is anyone would be better than JLo he’s totally clueless and has no idea what he’s doing

    • Frazer says:

Totally agree he won’t sack him unless we are balls Deep in a relagation battle ,If we look like staying up he will see his contract out no matter what. he just won’t back him in the transfer market until he is gone

  • Chris says:

Well how does this address the LGBTQ community:-)

  • John Ayris says:

We play Man City, Villa twice, Chelsea and Arsenal in coming weeks. With the number of chances we allow 18 Southampton, 22 Liverpool, all of them will beat us.

There will come a point where out of the FA cup and further drifting in the league the tight wad will have no option but to sack him.

Can anyone think of any reason why it will be anything other than the cheapest possible option at that point other than if Kretinski insists otherwise ?

The club is run in a series of amateur decisions that cost more in the long run than doing things professionally.

  • Smiffy says:

Michael Carrick !!! At least he is somebody who knows about “The West Ham Way”.
Having watched this football club since 1957 I have seen so many managers following after
Malcolm Allison’s initiation of the West Ham Academy that not since Greenwood and Lyall have we seemed to have any manager who understood “The West Ham Way”.
The team was not always winning but what entertainment we enjoyed !!!
The only purple patch in many years was winning the Conference League cup two years ago and that was in spite of, not because of, David Moyse.

    • Lee says:

Carrick knows more about the Man U way now …
We sorely need a new manager .. agreed…but not him …. We also need to start playing some of the academy youngsters ….. play them this season … which really is over for us now ….. reap the rewards next season….

  • Chris W says:

Neither ideal, but Potter at least had managed at Premier level. Last August we were all congratulating ourselves coz West Ham had “won the transfer window”. Now apparently all the signings are rubbish. Fullkrug good enough for Dortmund and Germany but not good enough for West Ham? He’s just back from a three month injury give him a run. Cornet never has had a chance, Guillhaume the same, Alvarez and Rodrigues look angry/frustrated, Paqueta has lost the will to live let alone play football poor bugger, at least Danny Ings looks keen when he gets a couple of minutes. Immediatel change of manager needed!

  • FredK says:

There is a very simple way forward for our Mr Sullivan and will also appeal to his budget as it’s free. Listen to the comments from the true West Ham fans, you know, the ones who you take for granted and trot out bullsh*t promises too. They are the guys(and ladies) who know this club inside out and actually give a monkeys.

  • Kenny Irons says:

Looks like we’re preparing for the Championship, then ?

    • Whippethammer says:

Terzic ruled himself out ages ago, both he and Carrick would be a no from me.
Potter doesn’t excite, but has got to be an improvement on a short-term deal.
Amorim will probably be ready for a change of location come the summer 😆

  • Taffyhammer says:

Amazing what £20 on Michael Carrick can do for the story! These bookies aren’t mugs.

  • Mick Bering says:

Though Carrick has W ham connections i feel Gramham Potter is a far superior manager and would suit us much better

  • Cubbie says:

Beyond caring . Spot on mate. Sullivan is a clown. Porn sells itself and without it Sullivan would still be in the gutter where he belongs. Steidten has achieved nothing… Loopy is an imposter. Heard that West Ham was a circus and was employed as a clown .Mystery solved 🤔
In my next life i want to be a football manager . Moyes and Southgate have 35 years of non achievement between them and the puppet King
approves a New Year honour . What has happened to the world ? Weirdos running everything and gone are the days when success brings rewards .

  • Beyond caring now says:

Is Carrick not going to cost any compensation fee then ?? Oh he is…..so what a waste of time even entertaining that idea,we all know we’ve got the tightest of tight Chairmen here.
Unless it’s a Manager out of work or one where no compensation is due its never gonna happen.
Sick of this Mickey Mouse club and the way it’s run…..
No leadership,no planning,no structure and no idea and it’s always going to be this way with that melt in charge running the show.
We are lucky it’s such a poor Premier league (again) otherwise we’d be in worse trouble than the sh#t show we witness every week.
Name me another club that is run so poorly ??
    Exactly,you can’t…..
F#ck of Sullivan and please take that boring tw#t Lopetegui with you…..the fans have had enough, sorry the real fans i should say not those mug Yourist fans that you Sullivan prioritise over the true life long born and bred fans that you are driving away…ffs this club eh

  • Chris W says:

David Moyes has just been given an OBE! He must be good, perhaps everyone was mistaken lets give HIM another go! 😂

    • Essexiron67 says:

Another 2 vital games what about every game between now and the end of the season. Watched Ipswich yesterday, good defence but every team is better all over the pitch than us ,sad
