The ongoing saga of West Ham’s failure to sign a decent front man transcends several coaches and technical directors. With the benefit of 20:20 hindsight, it would seem that even amidst all of his nonsensical tactics and failed strategies, former boss Graham Potter did make one correct call.

Back in February, Potter managed to secure Evan Ferguson on loan in a bid to strengthen a squad that was struggling for firepower up front. The Republic of Ireland striker arrived with promise, but his impact was minimal, clocking just 137 minutes of game time without registering a goal or assist. Critics blamed Potter for not selecting him: It appears that other managers, since that ill-fated loan spell, have agreed with the former Hammers head coach in his assessment of Ferguson.

Allowing Ferguson to languish on the bench was criticised at the time

In July 2025, Ferguson joined Roma on a season-long loan, with an option to buy. The move was seen as a strategic step to gain experience in a new league and reignite his form.

However, things didn’t go as planned. Despite featuring regularly, Ferguson has struggled to adapt to Roma’s tactical setup and Serie A’s defensive rigour. Nine games in, he remains goalless, with one assist and his confidence appears to have waned. Roma’s attacking woes have only amplified scrutiny, and Ferguson’s lack of impact has led to questions about his role in the squad.

As a consequence reports today suggest that Ferguson’s loan spell at AS Roma is being renegotiated, with Brighton & Hove Albion preparing to recall the striker.

Ferguson’s journey began with promise. Born in Bettystown, Ireland, he joined Brighton’s academy in 2021 after impressing at Bohemians. By 2022, he had broken into the first team and quickly made headlines with his mature performances and clinical finishing. His breakout season saw him net six goals in the Premier League, earning praise from pundits and a call-up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad.

Whether Ferguson reclaims his spot at Brighton or seeks another loan, his development will be closely watched. The early recall from Roma may be a setback, but it’s also potentially an opportunity and a chance to reset, refocus, and prove that his early promise was no fluke.

As for West Ham, Nuno Espírito Santo is on the hunt for a new striker in the January transfer window with Joshua Zirkzee at Manchester United a key target.  However, C&H can safely confirm that Ferguson won’t be returning to the London stadium to don a claret and blue shirt anytime soon.

I mean, end of the day, he’s gone (quite) a few games without scoring for Roma but Bergkamp when he signed for Arsenal went something like 8 or 9 games without scoring and was being ridiculed by fans and the press. Likewise, Thierry Henry took until around his 10th game to score for Arsenal.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Ferguson will ever be on their level (be amazed if he “Evan” came close) but those were two players going to a new country and struggled to adjust but are now considered EPL legends.

Maybe he grabs a goal or two next game and looks a player for Roma… or maybe not.

Thank you for this article sir.
You really cant be applauding Potter for the Ferguson saga at West Ham. He is one who got the board to dish put a heck of a lot of money to get the lad on load at WH.
From the few match minutes given to him, he showed some nice touches.
At may you missed the volume of pre-season goals Feguson did score at Roma … 5 goals in two friendlies.
Now we want about that, the lad has got goals in Him, which he has proven on International level too.
Fact is, how good the coach to untap that talent? We can say the same about our current you centre-forward who has scored a senior goal too. Nurture, develop and untap this talent and we will enjoy hom for years to come.
Come on you irons – God bless West Ham

We haven’t had strikers since Cottee & McAvennie !
We only need Championship level now in preparation for next season – we’ll be cast too far adrift by January to have any significance for this season.

Let’s use Calum Marshall in the meantime, he isn’t youth anymore, isn’t he 20 now? Same as Potts.
I really don’t understand what these so called managers see, that are all failing but hey, let’s keep playing the same way

didn’t Potter also say he didn’t need a forward in the summer?
Stevie Wonder could see we had nothing up top for the past 3 years …
