Profile of Gary Medel

|

West Ham transfer target Gary Medel is a talented midfield player who currently plays for Turkish giants Besiktas. Having spent some time playing for Inter Milan, he has the experience of the premier league before, playing for Cardiff City in the 2013/14 season.

He has shown his positioning and passing in the middle of the park enable him to control the pace of the game. While he is adept at carrying the ball forward, he is capable of some exquisite through balls from the midfield. He represented Chile at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and was a part of the famous Copa America winning Chilean side that featured the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal.

Medel joined the Ecuadorian club Universidad Católica at the age of 12. He went on to make  68 senior appearances but in 2009 he joined Boca Juniors on an initial loan for US$300,000 with the option to buy for $2.5 million playing 46 times scoring 7 goals.

Medel joined Sevilla for €3 million in 2011, on a 4½-year contract making 78 appearances and scoring 8 goals.

In 2013, Cardiff City confirmed that they had signed Medel from Sevilla for a club record £11 million fee on a four-year deal. He made his debut for the club on 17 August, in a 2–0 defeat against West Ham.

After Cardiff’s relegation, Medel joined Italian club Inter Milan for a reported £10 million fee in 2014.

In 2017, Medel signed for Turkish Süper Lig champions Beşiktaş for a reported €3 million signing a three-year contract.

From the Summer on, surely he has nothing to offer that a fit Carlos Sanchez already gives us.

As back up to Rice or as a replacement for Obiang probably not a bad signing.

He also has a short fuse and can be borderline brutal. I saw him playing for Sevilla and Cardiff and that is how he played, not the elegant “through ball” player depicted in the article. I don’t follow Calcio too much but I don’t think he made an unforgettable impression there. He is versatile but has been skipping from one club to another since coming to Europe. Why do you think that is ?
Might be a quick fix, but I would prefer someone else.
