Ratings 2: Irons v Brighton

Niall hands out his marks

Fabianksi: Some regulation saves, not much he could do with the goals 6
Coufal: Great pace and defensive play again 7
Ogbonna: Unfortunate to block Rice from clearing the ball for their first; kept Welbeck quiet 6
Balbuena: Defended adequately enough today 6
Cresswell: The periods in which he got forwards were our best phases of the game 6
Johnson:  Not a left wing-back by any stretch but gave it his best; a very calm finish for his first goal though 6
Rice: A good game, broke the play up well and one of the few who looked to get forwards 7
Soucek: Another header from a set piece and and probably his easiest ever 6
Noble: Presumably he did everything asked of him, whether he should have out there is another question 4
Bowen: Given an awful lot to do today given the selection, hard done by subbed at the interval 5
Haller: Typical Haller performance I’m afraid 4

Subs
Yarmolenko: Immediate impact in the final-third 7
Lanzini: Also an immediate impact giving much-needed creativity and control 7

Manager-watch:
A peculiar starting XI and the resulting first-half performance that you could have predicted. I can only think the selection is a nod to rotating players over this busy period. Things picked up after the positive changes were made at the break but 2 points lost, given the quality of the opposition  5

What match are the ratings for sir?
Haller, Mark N, Jarrod were extremely bad today. If average is 5, why do some not get the right rating of 3 and below, without prejudice.
We have overrated Jarrod who simply could not get his corners over the first Brighton player today … and you question his substitution. His refusal to play a good ball to Haller is very obvious, and his 1x attempt at goal today was so poor … together his previous attempts in recent weeks.
Jarrod, Fornals and Haller have consistently been playing bad recently.
And yet they are the ones on Moyes’ team sheet first, leaving Said B, Lanzini and Yarmo … even Snoddy on the bench.
Let’s hope Moyes does not forget about Antonio too?

Rice a 7…..wow,new golden boy cannot do anything wrong, was mediocre at best… SURELY THIS WILL BE NOBLES LAST GAME (use maybe in Cup game) Moyes has to freshen up v Southampton.. Otherwise we will be punished severely… Yarmelenko, Lanzini and Benrhama to start .. Noble, Haller out. .. Worrying times when Soucek and Rice looking leggy and Bowen looking shattered after all his great “efforts” in previous games… Why Moyes doesn’t want to give Benrhama a chance is mind boggling.. At least he offers something positive going forward, and takes on players which is great to see.

I agree with Chris, I thought rice was poor and apart from the goal Soucek didn’t do a lot. I thought Haller held the ball up quite well at times but until Yarmo came on had zero support.
I remember going to Brighton last year and Haller and chicharito linked well, he needs someone of that ilk around him.

    A little generous with some.
This was not Rice at his best. He seemed to be intent on compensating for others’ lacklustre performance. He flubbed the clearance having previously gotten in Soucek’s way.
    Noble was ineffective.
    Haller invisible.
Bowen couldn’t lift his corners kicks higher than 3 feet.
    A little harsh with others.
Johnson played well, and while no Masuaku, helped Cresswell do his job. He also SCORED his first goal for the senior club! At the academy since the age of 7. If Haller had bounced one in off his arse there would be a whole column on how he might be finding his scoring touch and the right to start. Do the lad justice and praise a good performance.

  • Chris says:

Rice a 7??? He was terrible today. I know he’s the golden boy, but this was a bad performance from him.

    • Jamino says:

100% agree Chris. Think some look at him through the claret tinted glasses. If Chelsea want to pay £80m then we take it for me

    • Hammersmiff says:

Yes I agree Chris, I rate Declan very highly but he certainly won’t have enjoyed his performance today.

Fabianski is becoming a liability, too slow off his line and too slow to release the ball. He is still a better keeper than Randolph. Coufal my man of the match again and Ogbonna were the pick of the defenders. Balbuena was poor and I would certainly freshen up the backline against Southampton and give Diop a run. Rice was very average today as was Soucek and again it would be great to perhaps throw Fornals into the middle and give one of them a rest. I thought Noble’s performance was his worst in a West Ham shirt – if Moyes has anything about him that should be the end of Noble. Bowen was completely out of sorts but I actually thought Haller did fine today. Moyes is just showing his true self, I have been saying it for a long time, as a manager just too negative. He should start the likes of Diop, Fornals and Benrahma against Soiuthampton to freshen up things and possible give young Johnson a start at LB in a back 4 giving Cresswell a rest.

  • John Shetcliffe says:

Moyes is tactically inept. Do not renew his contract. Hammers fans deserve better.

Noble must retire NOW. He has become an embarrassment to his family.

Suspect Sullivan signed Benrhama because this match ideal for his offensive contribution but rarely utilised by Moyes

  • Artran says:

Made a case a couple of weeks ago for keeping Haller in the team while Mikey was injured. What was I thinking? Not sure what the alternative would be but anyone would be better and would pose the opposing defences more problems than Haller
