Ratings 2: Irons v Spurs

CandH ratings man Niall McDonald hands out his marks

Fabianski: Not much he could do as the goals flew past him – one sharp save avoided a 4th going in and proved more important than I thought it was going to be at the time 6
Coufal: More right-back than wing-back today – struggled early on, and had a lot of the pitch to cover 5
Ogbonna: Improved throughout the game and was driving the team forward by the end. Bonus mark for blocking Winks for the equaliser 7
Balbuena: Poor for the Spurs opener. Excellent header started an extremely unlikely comeback 6
Cresswell: Contributed some excellent, vital crosses 6
Masuaku: Tough game today – dare I say improving defensively? Maybe I’m delirious with the comeback 5
Rice: Outnumbered in the middle with Soucek – stuck at it 5
Soucek: A game where he looked a little limited creatively. Still managed to get in position for a few trademark headers 5
Fornals: Just a few inches to short to get a header into the open goal 6
Bowen: Carried most threat just before the break, otherwise found Spurs defence too strong (pre-collapse) 6
Antonio: Found it very difficult to get going today; looked to have ice on his thigh, hopefully not serious 5

Subs
Lanzini: What. A. Goal. Gerrard-esque perfection – into Hammers folklore and deserved it after a really bad time 10!!!
Yarmolenko: Bundled Bale over superbly when it looked like he was going to get his trademark last minute goal 5
Snodgrass: On late for a draw-bonus, if such a thing exists. Won a couple of free-kicks to keep the pressure on Spurs defence  No rating

  1. Apart from Lanzini think your marks are quite harsh Niall, Spuds 🥔 were very good first half I would add 1 point to all 😀

    • Yarmolenko ran the length of the pitch to bundle Bale off his shot when he could have wrapped the game up. Yarmo then played a sublime reverse pass to put Coufal in for the cross that led to our second goal. I know he only played for 17 minutes but he really was instrumental in our comeback. Only5??

  2. your rating is a shame ! we outplayed them for 85 minutes —
paul Hammer since 74 north of norway and season card holder

  3. Do your rankings not account for the level of competition? I hate the spuds, but they have one of the best squads in all of club football. WH recover from a horror start, outplay them in the second half and produce the first 3+ goal comeback in the final 10 mins in Premier history… and you give them 5’s and 6’s? But if we beat Gillingham 3-1 in the cup it would be all 7’s and 8’s.

Love your site and generally agree with your viewpoint, but you are either overestimating our squad or underestimating the spuds this time.

  4. Did you watch the game or switch it of after 16 minutes then just watch match of the day’s highlights?
After a dismal start we played as a team that hadn’t given up, everyone worked and put in the best effort I have seen across the entire team for years watching the Hammers. We were attacking as a unit, we always looked a threat down the wings.

  5. Soucek deserves extra points for smashing into Kane (who should have been booked a few times and got away with it)

Antonio deserves credit for his determination – at 3-0 down he got angry instead of giving up and kept pushing

  6. Not sure I watched the same game as you….

Rice was superb today, despite being out-gunned and getting overrun.
Fornals…. didn’t even notice he was playing until he missed from a yard out.
Antonio worked his socks off a lone striker…

    Game of opinions I guess

  7. Your seriously underrating our players. You have to take into account the strength of the opposition. You have to take into account the hard work and perseverance of the entire team to achieve a special outcome. One of the greatest comebacks by any team in living memory.
