Redknapp gives verdict on team and owners

Former West Ham player and manager Harry Redknapp believes West Ham will be fine this season despite missing targets in the transfer window.

He insists we can finish mid-table in the Premier League this season pointing to recent winning performances against Wolves and Leicester City.

Harry told Jim White on Sky Sports News deadline day special live show West Ham look ok Jim. Let’s be honest, they’ve gone to Leicester and what a performance, what a result. They can only cut their cloth accordingly if they haven’t got the money. It looks to me like they’ve made some good signings. The two Czechoslovakian boys they look very good players. They’ve kept Declan Rice. David is getting the best out of the players there, so let’s see how they go. I think West Ham will be fine this year.”

Later on, Harry added that West Ham was a massive club and perhaps needed new owners to take it to the next level.

Speaking about his mid-table predicted finish for the Hammers this season he told White:  ‘West Ham fans want to finish higher than that, they’ve got 60,000 people every week there now because that ground is full. What West Ham need in the long term and, no disrespect to David Sullivan and David Gold who have come in, they need somebody to come in and buy the club. They need someone with massive money to take the club where it needs to go. Because the support and the fan base is incredible.”

ClaretandHugh says: Harry – for all his faults –  is never one to sit on the fence as was the case when he was sacked by Terry Brown for giving an outspoken fanzine interview. And it’s no surprise to hear him making it clear that the present owners don’t have enough money to take the Hammers to the next level. And to be honest Sullivan can have no complaints after spending so much of the window moaning about how short of brass the club is at the moment.

  1. It’s not just lack of money Sean, it is the professionalism, lack of a coherent plan and manner in which they continously drag the good name of this club in to the mire. We were warned by Brummie fans and they were right. We cannot and will not move forward under these 3, their time is well over, they will make a profit but they need to sell and ASAP.

  2. Given the transfer policy over the past years it’s hard to disagree with Redknapp. Our club are not investing in players which appears to be based on Sullivan’s own need for a quid or two. The club deserves better.

  3. The fans deserve better not the club as they have bled us dry since day 1 ⚒️

  4. He is saying what more and more of us are, certainly for many years I have been grateful for what they did but everything has a limit and they are actively harming us not benefitting us. The grass certainly isn’t always greener in fact rarely it is but we would do well to have some owners that have a long term strategy and the ability to implement it and adapt when they need to COYI GSB Out !!!

  5. When the club needed rescuing after the Icelandic adventure went belly up, they came in and bailed us out. I will always be grateful to them for that. But the club has outgrown them now and they need to move on and hand the reigns over to people wealthy enough to take this great club to a level worthy of its massive fan base.

  6. I distinctly remember one of the owners, probably Gold, saying a coupl eof years ago that they were first of all fans and were here long term unless unless a foreign billionaire or oil sheik could come in and spend the mega millions they hadn’t got to do what Man City had done. I don’t like seeing them pilloried.

  7. It’s true Sullivan can have no complaints about opinions like Redknapps after pleading poverty. We sit and watch other clubs go out and buy players for 40 million plus by meeting their release clause. Bang job done. No messing about. And there we are quibbling over small time stuff. It’s embarrassing. For months before this window we were broadcasting who moyes top targets were, the best players from the championship, players like Ollie Watkins, Matty cash etc. Then we have to sit and watch while teams like Aston blooming villa go out and buy the same players and subsequently transform themselves from relegation candidates into a top six club. Again, it’s embarrassing. I used to try and back the owners because I thought despite their failings they wanted success for our club as much as I did. They promised the next level. However it’s pretty obvious now that without owners who can afford to take us to the proverbial next level its impossible for us to ever get to the next level. Instead if we’re not careful we will go into a downward spiral. Time now as Harry Redknap says for new owners to come in and take our club to where it wants to be.
