“Refusing to Leave” | C&H Exclusive | Players Reject Chance to Move

In an exclusive conversation with Claret & Hugh, a top West Ham source revealed that some Hammers players are refusing to leave the club. When asked this morning whether deals for outgoing players were close, the insider stated, “We are trying to move or loan fringe players, but it’s not easy due to little demand, and when we do get an offer, they won’t go.”

As we exclusively reported earlier today, West Ham has shifted focus on the types of deals being considered and now accepts that loan transfers might be the best option. However, the club is still some way off from generating the necessary funds to finalise the transfer of Carlos Soler, though they remain hopeful that more interest will emerge over the next five days.

If players continue to refuse to leave, even on loan, there is little the Hammers can do to force their departure. Julen Lopetegui is believed to have informed his squad who has a future under his leadership, but it seems this has had little impact, with some players seemingly content to stay and collect wages.

Our source did inform us last week, “we gave some of the players big wages and now it’s hard to shift them”.

Additionally, as we reported earlier this morning, Kurt Zouma is still exploring every possible opportunity to complete his move to the UAE and is hopeful of finding a compromise.

Little or no chance of game time and they have so little self respect to prefer to do nothing. That personal MOT that caused long deliberations over signing new players appears to have unearthed some real Jim Royal type characters.

    • Ian says:

I don’t think it’s as easy as that. It’s a job. They aren’t fans like us. If my boss came to me and told me that a rival company wanted me, and they were prepared to let me go so they could bring in someone younger, but, I have to take a 50 or 60% paycut, am I going to leave just to help him out? He’ll no. And if your honest, neither would you.
It would be interesting to know exactly who authorised these ridiculous contracts in the first place. It wasn’t the players that’s for sure

      • Andy Stone says:

If I’m honest I took a pay cut at the end of 2010 to get back into business equipment lending that had been decimated by the GFC. One of the best moves of my career for happiness and eventually increasing my income way past that which I had to jump ship for.

        • Ian says:

You’re the exception to the ruke then. Glad it worked out for you.

          • Andy Stone says:

            Thanks for that, much appreciated.

These guys have a short career but unlike those from way back they’re wealthy beyond most people’s dreams and able to invest for good returns. Yet they’re happy to run down their careers doing not much more than training. As you get older your memories have a greater value.

  • Ian says:

Players have contracts and are within their rights to stay. Yes you would hope that they would want to be playing regularly and a move could provide that. But ultimately the club authorised these contracts, many on ridiculous wages, and so it only has itself to blame if it can’t then offload these players because of lower wage offers etc.

    • Gonzo says:

To be Ian ‘The source’ has said some are on too high wages. I’ll amend the piece.

      • Ian says:

Gonzo. That’s exactly what I meant mate. But whose fault is that? Why should a player walk away from his contract? These aren’t fans, it’s a job. Up to the club to find a solution.

  • Hammeroo says:

I cannot see how we can sign Soler or Abraham then if none of Deadwood Danny, Deadwood Maxwell or Deadwood Kurt cannot be moved on. Sorry to repeat the horrible term after some of us have said we don’t like players to be given that moniker, but it appears several other websites, for example Hammers News, keep using it all the time!

    • John simmonds says:

I reckon they’re going to have problems shifting players. If we are desperate to get shot of them prospective buyers are going to play hardball and try to bid us down. Especially as is Sully theyd ‘be screwing. Not many people like him anyway. Even we don’t!! Do unto others Sully… that’s the way it goes

      • Dave is ok says:

Saved us after the Icelandics put us on the brink. I am very thankful for The Daves, I can’t speak for everyone else as you do. A lot of fans don’t have a clue about running a football club

  • Simon says:

Another sad, dark hole created by the great Moyes + co, and allowed to happen by Sullivan + Brady?
Now the club is held to ransom by the very people who sucked the best financial juice out of the club.
And yes, I understand that the players have contractual rights which they now strongly embrace.
But I also understand that true football lovers, always wanna play the game, no matter where ????

  • Ian the sub says:

other websites using derogatory terms is no reason or justification for C.H . to copy , they should endeavour to be above that !

  • Chris says:

Maybe the players WHU want gone should have been made to train with u21’s instead of being included in match day squads. Maybe a bit more incentive to.leave?

    • Dudley Tyler says:

For what purpose? To humiliate them? That has repercussions throughout the squad. Plenty of friendships in the squad and players will notice how others are treated. And if they are part of the first team squad why not have them on the bench if suits the manager? Plenty of other teams with much more expensive players in terms of fee and wages and with longer contracts in the same position. Look at Chelsea and the situation they are in. You think with just a few days until the end of the window clubs are going to be trying to bring Cornet in when Chelsea may have a huge firesale?

  • Paul Basnett says:

More of the legacy of the Moyes transfer policy? Older and some poor players on high wages that Moyes didn’t play anyway. His approach was so flawed.

  • John Sharp says:

West Ham have been running a holiday camp for years. Too many players join for a final pay day and can just sit in a deck chair while their contract runs down. We make it too comfortable for ageing players and offer contracts that are too long. Nice ‘work’ if you can get it!

  • David McIntosh says:

Moyes the gift that keeps giving

  • Johnjj says:

Everytime I see ings and his stupid hair transplant I get angry but not as angry as when I think how irresponsible the football industry has become to pay a totally average journeyman 125k per week. He is the hangover from the Moyes era and a reminder of the sheer incompetency of spending £400m for losers like ings AND to create the worst defence in WHs prem history. God I hate David Moyes so much

  • Bonzo says:

Lopetegui was wishing the transfer window was closed before the season started in a recent interview. He didn’t want to lose any players.

  • Pongo says:

Certain players had good reputations, but sadly they only came to the hammers for the money as they have never performed at a, decent level since we signed them, ings, aguerd, cornet the most obvious 3, and now they don’t want to leave as they will lose there over inflated wages. We should just cancel their contracts as they clearly haven’t done the job they have been paid to do. And no one else will want to sign them as its clear to everyone they are just greedy bas***ds just wanting to collect the cash. It would be worth it just to save on their extortionate wages that none of them are worth. And if they then wanted to find a new club they’d be lucky to get 10k per week. As a club we should learn from this not to buy older greedy players who are at best useless and money grabbers.

  • Pongo says:

If they had any real feeling for the club they would just go and let the club replace them with younger players who actually have some quality without the greed. But as we all know they just have the dilligaf effect.

  • Hugh Jarse says:

Greedy, useless, lazy Wayne Kerr’s!!!!! Thank you Moyes for your brilliant management skills, kin zero. Ings, get your useless ass off the bench and F O. Take the other 2 with you, bas..ds

  • Cueball says:

I do have to chuckle as we inevitably compare these blokes to the average Joe earning a wage.

125 Grand a week … stop and imagine that just for a second as a basic wage that also has sponsorship, bonuses, media appearances, etc on top. Monetise you social media presence as someone in the public eye and more rolls in with very little effort.

These are not “real world” scenarios and I get the career is short but (52 x 125 Grand) @ 50% Tax with a few conservative bonuses thrown in … yearly take home somewhere in the region of THREE AND A HALF MILLION.

“Ahhh poor bloke you’re asking him to take a HUGE cut so he only takes home under two million a year for the remaining 4 years of his career”. Pay the club back, pay the fans back, have some decency and do the right thing in this modern age of stupid wages versus tight financial regulations. This sport has given you plenty it’s time to give a bit back.

    There endth the rant 😉

  • Aussiehammer21 says:

I feel for Zouma, at least ever professional he has tried to get a contract elsewhere! If the other two are playing hardball then I’m sure they can train alone. Not with the u23s as they could poison them against the club, if they don’t want to move on then they can train alone. It easy to remedy take your money but the sponsorship will dry up no game day starts no goal scoring bonus, I’m sure the club will eventually win out and if the players themselves destroy their careers then so be it!!
