Remarkable Hammers spending claim

West Ham’s owners have taken plenty of stick down the years for both their lack of investment and the players they have bought.

But as things stand there can be few complaints about their involvement in the market financially this season where they will see the spending soar to around £200 million should Lucas Paqueta join the club.

And that will be huge in terms of financial investment and indeed make them the second biggest spenders in world football during this transfer market.

Claretandhugh has revealed over the past few days the extent of the club’s market involvement but Kaveh Solhekol has made quite remarkable claim  on Sky Sports.

The reporter did some quick calculations while on air during the Transfer Show.

He claimed that should the Paqueta, deal go through – as seems likely – it would make the Hammers the second highest spenders in world football this summer.

“I was just going to say on West Ham and the amount of money they’ve spent this window,” Solhekol said.

“I know David Moyes wants us to get the figures exactly right, sometimes it’s difficult to get the transfer fees exactly right.

But if we go by what Transfermrkt, the respected website, are saying – they’re saying at the moment the fifth biggest spenders in the window this summer are West Ham, and they say they’ve spent 139m Euros.

“The only clubs who have spent more than West Ham, according to Transfermrkt, are Chelsea, they’re top 202m Euros, then Barcelona 153, then Forest 148, then Manchester United 143, then West Ham 139.

  1. I think the figures that are being spent by clubs include add on which I think are incorrect because clubs have not spent that money. Sjy reported we signed Downes for 12m. The 12m included potential add ons that the club may never actually spend if the criteria is not achieved. I think what we have agreed to pay is 9.5m. So if I apply this to all signings and let’s assume we have paid the full amount up front (which I am sure is not the case in all cases). AREOLA 8m, KEHRER 10m, DOWNES 9.5m, CORNET 17.5m, AGUERD 25m and SCA 30.5m. The total committed gross spend is 100.5m at this point. Now let’s assume all that was paid up front so if we now subtract money we have brought in from the sale of Diop 15m, Alese 1m and Cullen 750k our total committed net spend is 100.5 less 16.75m which is 83.75m. I am not saying these figures are exact but they are there or thereabouts. So when sky are reporting we have spent this I completely ignore it as it includes add ons and does not take into account sales. We have spent if we have paid everything up front 83.75m this summer. I hope you find this useful.

  2. Sorry I missed Emerson our 7th signing for 13m. Total net spend is 96.75.

  3. You have a point there Johnham, and ut might be absoltely correct the fees involve add ons which may or may not be triggered. However this would apply to all fees by all clubs, so for comparison we should still be amongst world’s top spenders this window

  4. Agree, totally I just wanted to point out that our committed net spend is alot less than what sky are reporting. Areola cost us 8 or 8.5, Cornet was a straight 17 5 no add ons and Scanacca total price was 35m but close to 5m in add ons so we gave committed to 30m. When I see figures that we face already spent 140m 130m 125m already this summer is not technically correct as we have spent 96.75m before we take sakes.
