Report: Barca players ready to accept pay cuts

Barcelona players are reportedly willing to take pay cuts to help the club out.

Sport report that president Josep Maria Bartomeu has spoken to the club’s four captains, Lionel Messi, Sergio BusquetsJordi Alba and Sergi Roberto, about reducing salaries.

The players are said to understand the situation and have come to an agreement, although it has not been finalised just yet.

Marca also report the players are in talks to cut their salaries as Barcelona are not going to be able to cover their €1 billion budget now.

La Liga has been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak and it’s not yet known when it may resume.

President Javier Tebas has suggested the league could return in mid-May, but there is no guarantee with Spain on a lockdown that could reportedly be extended for another 15 days.

The Champions League has also been put on hold, although UEFA are said to be hoping to play the final at the end of June.

Barcelona are reportedly expecting to lose €60 million in revenue due to the pandemic.

ClaretandHugh says: Hot on the heels of the news that agents are looking to possibly sue for unpaid fees, comes the world’s most famous club likely to get a pay cut accepted by the players. This should spark a realisation among players that agents – whilst ostensibly working in the interests of their clients. That simply cannot be the case if they are ready to ‘rinse’ clubs without any regard to where it may leave them when attempting to negotiate wage deals once the global health scare is past. It’s encouraging that the superstars are ready to do the right things and send the correct message to the game. It is also the right message to send to young fans – who maybe don’t see the health scare as being to worrying to them – to realise that their heroes are seeing things in a very different light
