The rumour mill confirms that high on West Ham’s list of Graham Potter replacements is the Portuguese Nuno Espírito Santo: The former Wolves and Nottingham Forest man offers a level of reassuring competency if not the most expansive brand of football.
When considering how this whole crisis came about at West Ham it is plain that the decision to part ways with David Moyes and the two disastrous appointments that followed originated from a desire to see a better brand of football at West Ham.
Nuno would offer a return to the low block and football on the break which was the style unleashed by David Moyes during lockdown to such great success. Hammers fans would feel a lot more tolerant of this style providing the new manager succeeded where Potter failed – with all of his possession-based football, in actually getting points on the board.
An article this afternoon provided some surprising insight into ‘Nuno’s’ managerial career. Footballfancast.coms article, ostensibly comparing the Portuguese manager with Tottenham’s newly installed Thomas Frank- and decreeing that Espirito Santo is the better coach. Which surprised me.
Looking at the Portuguese coach’s 184 Premier League Games, his record is 72 have been wins, 45 have been draws and 67 have been losses, which gives him an average of 1.42 points per game. ( Frank’s record is 57 wins in 157 games at 1.34 points per game).
And Graham Potter? 47 wins in 164 matches at 1.2 points per match overall: At West Ham the stats are a dismal 6 wins in 23 at 1.0 point per game.
So the stats have it – Espírito Santo offers the best record – and most recently at Nottingham Forest 30 wins in 71 games says it all: From Relegation bound to European qualification. Something tells me West Ham should be snapping his arm off in their haste to tie him down.
As footballfancast.com sum up:”Ultimately, Frank is a great coach, but from their raw numbers to what we have seen them do with Premier League teams, it looks like Nuno is simply better.”
We need someone with West Ham winning statistics. Bare stats with other team may be an indication, but that is all.
We don’t want to suffer another Alan Curbishley or Pellegrini.
Good old rumour mill!
Nuno isn’t the “Yes Man” the board are looking for. Probably why they’re speaking to other coaches…
Defend deep, low possession, counter attack… we’ve been here before.
Yeah and it got us successive years of European football, almost Champions league and a trophy.
I’ll take that any day over the current slop.
We must get Nuno it does not matter the cost because it will cost us a lot more if we are relegated
Revenue, attendance and just playing in the premier for us fans is massive.
I just hope we go for the right person than keep taking the cheaper, easier option and not forgetting the money we loose every time we sack someone
Let’s get this club back on track with a top manager please
They will make the decision to appoint him & find out that they are too late; that someone else has beaten them to him, or that he declines the offer because of all the procrastination.
