All of the fifty thousand-odd supporters at London Stadium last Saturday knew they were in the presence of somebody very special: The Hammers’ three ‘match winners’ turned on the style and West Ham switched on the afterburners to leave Sunderland standing for the first 45 minutes of a game which the Irons won at a canter.

However Mateus Fernandes showed he is in a class of his own both at West Ham and in the Premier League: This from a young man who is still just twenty one years old.

Not only owning to his wonderful goal, but for his all round game, Fernandes dominates his peers and stands atop the ‘Wonderkid Power Rankings’ – the best of the English Premier League’s young talent – for another week.

Produced by 3addedminutes.com, the ratings assess Fernandes’ performance for the Hammers thus:

“Even leaving his wonderful goal to one side, he was excellent throughout. In possession, he continues to be intelligent and economical with his passing and almost never seems to take an option which doesn’t improve West Ham’s platform – and out of possession, he’s simply outstanding in one-on-one situations (he won all seven of his ground duels this weekend), lets precious little past him and routinely wins the ball back for his side.

Fernandes topping the Premier League rankings – again

An outstanding all-round box-to-box midfielder who seems to continue getting steadily better every week, and who finally had a highlight reel moment to match his persistent excellence. A worthy number one whose lead over the rest is only growing as it stands”

As is his value. Should he succeed in helping to haul the Hammers up out of the relegation zone before May then the will do well to hang onto him for the length of his contract: Fail and suffer relegation then Fernandes will be first on the take-out menu of some of the finest sides in Europe.

But for now, enjoy, and whist he keeps performing like this – there’s still hope for the Hammers.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Nuno needs to appreciate what he’s got and give team backing they need.

Just a matter of time before he goes to Real Madrid or Man City. God forbid they don’t sell him to Arsenal.

Now if he can combine the tackling and passing of Declan Rice with the box to box goalscoring of Frank Lampard Jr …….just saying 😊⚒️⚒️
