With just over two weeks left in the winter window and West Ham now ‘just’ the five points adrift from Nottingham Forest’s place of safety in the Premier League, things are about to get very interesting. The Hammers board look to be preparing to throw more cash at recruiting players to keep them in the Premier League, whilst publicly further backing David Sullivan’s choice for head coach Nuno Espírito Santo.

If the Hammers hadn’t beaten Spurs you’d think it likely the transfer tap would have been turned off – but with chances of a “Great Escape v2” still alive and well, (just)- the signs are that the Hammers are still in the market to ‘rebalance’ as Nuno puts it.

With cash to spend if the Paqueta deal – rumoured to be ‘ready’ at £35 million – goes ahead, the Hammers have this evening been linked by French outlet mediafoot.net with an exciting 20 year old French prospect.

Guillaume Restes – Mads Hermansen replacement at London stadium?

Toulouse’s Guillaume Restes – French former u17 international goal keeper – is said to be under scrutiny by West Ham:  Picked up and reported by thehardtackle.com, the goal keeper is seen, apparently , as a Hermansen upgrade:

[West Ham are] “Linked with Toulouse’s 20-year-old keeper Guillaume Restes. The young Frenchman has made his mark with some impressive performances for Toulouse, and he has turned up 92 times for the senior side.

The Hammers are now ready to push for a move this month itself, with the keeper reportedly valued at €20 million in the current market.”

Sounds all well and good, but without a centre back upgrade, the best ‘keeper in the world is going to struggle to keep a clean sheet if Max Kilman sets foot on the turf again.

You’d have to question Nuno’s priorities from the evidence of his own eyes in the last couple of months. I’m sure I’m not the only supporter reading this and silently demanding: Where’s the new centre backs, West Ham?

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Who was wearing Mavropanos’s shirt on Saturday? he was brilliant! If only mavro could play like that every game.

No you’re not the only fan asking about CB’s on Andy Irving it seems a little mad to let someone who might be useful in the championship and is in the right wage structure go for less than we paid for him doesn’t it ?

It just feels like muddled thinking and planning by a board that have lost the plot. We are starting to see possibly why Nuno was sacked by Forest if he is making these decisions.

As for the keeper we have Finlay Herrick and Fabianski when he is fit.

I don’t have a problem buying creative midfielders or a keeper like this Bento guy but not taking punts on these kids that are unproven when our biggest priority is to find at least one CB to play alongside Todibo.

All of our efforts must be to secure a good centre back and defensive leader. Kilman is a total liability and must not play again in the Premiership. The big Greek is liable to make a mistake occasionally but Todibo is so much better without the need to cover for Kilman’s awful performances. I nearly said defending but that would be a totally mispresentation !!

We shouldn’t worry who’s just above us we just need to keep winning

  • Darkhorse says:

The best goalkeeper in the world cannot stop the goals with such a leaky defence. The club need to get there priorities right.

  • Macephtopheles says:

Not familiar with the kid but whether he’s the next Buffon or a total buffoon is really kind of irrelevant as Areola has been solid enough. And if he gets injured and Nuno doesn’t fancy using Hermansen then we’ve got Fabianski on the books still.

As said here, we need at least one solid (or one who’ll hopefully be, anyway) centre back and preferably a couple. Whether it’s Kilman, Todibo or Mavropanos you’re generally wondering when the next mistake will be coming that costs us.

If he has a 20m euros/£17m+ market value and is a first team regular at his age, they’re likely looking for a lot more to sign him. So unless he’s actually best friends with Charlie Cresswell and the plan is to bring both in together then it seems a pretty pointless move to be chasing.

How much did we sell Andy Irving to Sparta Prague for? and what wages has that freed up, anybody?

  • X says:

Oh please. Let’s spend the money we’ve got on positions we actually need right now please instead of wasting money on the next Guilherme.

  • Paul Basnett says:

Whatever West Hams problems are goalkeepers aren’t one of them.

  • Andy 74 says:

Could we potentially have centre backs already Golembeckis , mayers, scarles also kante and next season casey

  • Jeeps says:

Who at whu has got a bee in their bonnet about goalkeepers.
Looking at headline will send happy thoughts until they read another £17m for goalkeeper.
Why can’t they get it that c/bks are needed.
How many times does it have to be reiterated?
