Report: Hammers face hitch in Gomez hijack ploy

Spanish reports claim Maxi Gomez will leave Celta Vigo today for Valencia in exchange for 16 million euros (£14.3m) plus Santi Mina and the two-year loan of Jorge Saenz.

Although West Ham are attempting to hijack the offer with a greater cash offer of around £36m and much higher wages it appears Gomez has accepted a significantly lower wage to stay in Spain and play in the Champions League next season for Valencia.

Celta yesterday confirmed the signing of Gabriel Fernandez from Penarol, with the Uruguayan agreeing to a five-year deal. The 25-year-old will wear the No.19 and will be presented at 7 pm local time on Friday.

A photo emerged on social media last night claiming to be leaked Valencia announcement photo.

We now wait for official confirmation from Spain but certainly, the news at this time appears grim for West Ham who look like they must pursue striker targets.

However, the Hammers are still on the case with a senior source telling us by e-mail: “We will know a lot more within 48 hours.”

  1. Sorry but this is exactly what I said would happen…absolute clowns , can’t be bothered to say anymore..

    • Money doesn’t always talk. If the player has his heart set on Spain and Champions league what can you do?

Problem is you don’t get to speak to the player himself, you speak to agents and intermediaries

It is in their interest to create competition to push the price up, they aren’t going to say outright the player won’t come to you!

      It is what agents do!

    • If the bloke wants to stay in Spain it seems options are limited. What would u do Hammerkip?

      • Since we have been after Maxi Gomez since January, would we not have already known that he would rather stay in Spain or if he was to leave, it would be for a club that can offer him what he wants, Champions League football?

      • We’ve put a lot of eggs in this basket and to supposedly find out now he wants to stay in Spain has, along with Arnautovic, kinda derailed our window, our preparation and who knows – potentially our season.

We’ve spent the best part of 6 months showing interest and not moving forward. To get business done early then you need to make more serious offers earlier, then you get to find out where the player is at. We can’t keep low balling or sitting on the fence for what is by all accounts our number one priority.

Hopefully there is still a chance, although personally I haven’t seen much of him so don’t know whether he is worth the fuss. We need to act quickly now and stop playing the game, whoever we bring in. Otherwise, the good work that we seemed to start this summer will be forgotten and we’ll remember this close season like so many in the past.

      • Well I certainly wouldn’t of waited and waited and then waited some .more and the finally put a bid in once Valencia h ad already tied it up ,I mean that is just ridiculous..tell me how on earth can waiting this long benefit us ..if we offered 40 million at the start of all this rather than now once Valencia mate there move, it would of been accepted and he would probably be our player now ..a nd if he wanted to stay in Spain why have we wasted all this time on him rather than just ask if the terms were ok would he come over..it just beggars belief

  2. This just irks me , I hope it’s not true we messed about to much if we wanted him should have put in a proper offer initially . Still you never know we might get him.

  3. Let’s hope the backroom team have a good option B otherwise our season will go down the pan

  4. People moaning about how we’ve screwed this up. We’ve gone in with a way over the odds offer to both club and player to try and do this deal. The fact of the matter is that the player himself wants to go to Valencia and doesn’t want to come to us. He had the two options in front of him, with is offering a much more advantageous wage packet, but he decided that money isn’t the most important thing. Fair play to him imo. If Arnie had that kinda mindset then the whole drama with him would never have happened.

Clubs done everything right here, and while it’s a massive setback and blow after all the time and effort we’ve put into this player, it’s one of those things.

I’m sure pellegrini and husillos have other names on their list to move on to, whether they are players we’ve heard mentioned or not. Look at the fornals deal, that happened almost completely out of nowhere with no one being any the wiser. This isn’t the time for a moan and war within the club. Just gotta move on to the next target

YES – 6 MONTHS AFTER WE WERE FIRST LOOKING AT BUYING HIM AND AFTER THE VALENCIA DEAL WAS RUMOURED TO BE ‘ALREADY DONE’.

The fact of the matter is that the player himself wants to go to Valencia and doesn’t want to come to us.

YOU DONT KNOW THIS AS ‘FACT’. BUT EVEN IF IT IS – HE MAY HAVE GIVEN UP ON US BECAUSE AFTER ALL THIS TIME WE STILL HAVEN’T AGREED A FEE WITH HIS CLUB.

  5. Dont panic people he honestly doesnt look that great… blessing in disquse

  6. Here we go all the doom and gloom merchants.
As sean has already said gomez wants to play CL and stay in spain there is nothing we can do about that.
I really think we have tried our best and no amount of money and higher wages will tempt him.
Pellegrini will be disappointed but i trust in him to get a good striker before the window closes.

  7. I don’t know what the real situation is but I think it’s crunch time now. We need to lay down a very lucrative offer which prices Valencia out of the deal. Then say to the player or rather his intermediaries, ‘this is what we’re offering’, take it or leave it by Monday, if not we’re moving on’.

As much as I would like Gomez because I believe him to be the man Pellegrini wants, ultimately time is running out and if we waste too much time on this, we’ll find we don’t have the time to bring anybody else in and that’s a big worry. Husillos and Pellegrini much have 3-4 other options they believe will be a good fit. I’d suggest we give them a decision to make and a time frame, if they turn us down, go get somebody else.

  8. It is always difficult to know how a player will turn out and if they really want to come and play for us. I remember Enner Valencia talked of watching nightmare on Green street as a way of preparing for WHU – but ultimately he was a disappointment. Matty Etherington never seemed that enthusiastic about signing but was overall a success. So if Gomez wants to stay in Spain and play CL then good luck to him – hopefully we have alternatives lined up. Let us wait and see what happens before starting the blame game

  9. You would think that after 6/7 months of trying to get him we would have known this.

Maybe it’s the club and agent saying he would prefer to stay in Spain to try and get us to offer more money and wages?

  10. This is getting embarrassing now.. it has been reported for ages that Gomez wants CL & to stay in Spain. Why are the club still wasting their time with this farce?

    • I wonder if you still say the same thing if we signed him!!! Anderson took months. The club have a number 1 target and are pursuing it. If they just gave up people would say they gave up too easily, so can’t win either way!!!

I am sure they are already working on target 2, but for me until Gomez has moved we should carry on trying to convince him!

  11. It is just incredible to think we have been chasing a player who wants to play in Spain. I am absolutely astounded by this lack of cop on, at this rate we will end up with players like Mitrovic who are no where near this level. Really disappointed in our director of football if this turns out to be a waste of time and money. Secondly if we sell Arnie we need another quality forward in addition to Gomez. Gomez is not a replacement for Arnie, we need an Arnie replacement too, otherwise we are not going to get anywhere near the top 6. Are we aiming for top 6 yes or no ? My preference is to look at a player that can play anywhere in the front 4 positions, a player with pace. Rondon and Gomez are too alike for me. We have Antonio and Silva as good options too. We need a Gomez like signing and a player to fill the boots of Arnie as Gomez does not have that pace. We also need a top CM box to box. We have no player who has the quality necessary to do this job for us. We need 3 top signings and quickly if we are to keep progressing and keep hold of our top players.
