Report: Hammers interested in 8-cap winger

West Ham are being reported as holding an interest in Sporting Lisbon winger Gonzalo Plata.

Sport Witness carries a report from Portuguese newspaper Record, claiming that Plata is set to leave in either the January transfer window or the summer.

They claim that the Hammers are interested in a swoop for the 20-year-old, who has won eight caps for Ecuador.

Primarily a right winger, who can also play on the left, he has made a total of four appearances in Liga NOS this season, totalling just 62 minutes.

The report states that the Irons were interested in a deal in the summer, though no transfer was agreed.

Now they claim the Hammers would like to do a loan-to-buy deal, similar to the one that saw Said Benrahma move to the club from Brentford.

Napoli and Newcastle are both said to be interested, but Sporting want a total of €20m to let him go. That’s £18.1m.

Sporting only own half of his rights, though, sharing them with his former club Independiente Del Valle, making any deal difficult to do.

ClaretandHugh says: We don’t need a winger – we need a striker and defensive midfielder as we go into the second half of the season. Jarrod Bowen is doing a great job down that side of the park and although not always at his best Andriy Yarmolenko is an adequate replacement when he does find a level of form. Sport Witness are regularly linking players with the Irons but we really don’t see this one as being too likely.

  1. Right call Dave!
IMHO, No need for another winger, especially for £20mil.
Given the uncertain financial position of the UK and football in general, I expect nothing more than a loan signing this January…..
Then IF Moyes is backed to complete the process, expect to see a lot of turnover next summer.

  2. Another bloody winger???

  3. Not even sure we need a defensive midfielder. Both rice and Soucek can fill in there if the other is injured. I’d rather we got a another box to box fella, better than Soucek, someone along the lines of loftus cheek, ward prowse, billing or capoue. Just my preference.

  4. Can he play Left Wing-Back? We desperately need cover for Arthur.

No idea who plays there if he gets injured/suspended!
