Report: Hammers not done

West Ham want to sign another midfielder after completing the purchase of Flynn Downes from Swansea City, according to a new report from the London Evening Standard.

The Irons are closing in on a deal to buy Downes from the Championship club.

But the Standard now reports that boss David Moyes is keen to add further reinforcements to his midfield as the summer transfer window rolls on.

Nayef Aguerd has already been signed from Rennes, while Alphonse Areola has come in permanently from PSG, and Downes is likely to be the third new addition.

But another midfielder is wanted, with Mark Noble retiring and Alex Kral heading back to Russia after his disastrous loan spell.

There remains interest in signing Jesse Lingard but it remains to be seen if the free agent will decide to move to the London Stadium after his Manchester United exit.

There is rival interest from the likes of Everton, Newcastle, and Spurs.

  1. Imho we should get our fingers out and buy Tielemans as he can unlock defences and is an upgrade on what we have. Downes is a defensive midfielder and although he looks good at breaking up play at a lower level it is yet to be seen how he will cope with the step up. If Soucek is going we should also sign that giant from France as he is a like for like replacement, Downes is not a goal scorer according to Swansea fans more like a Declan Rice type although not in the same league.

  2. Don’t know anything about this lad, but for £12m he must’ve been a decent performer in the Championship last season. Does anyone on here have insight?

I also can’t believe that Coventry would be a worse member of our squad than Kral, so really hope he’s given a chance.

  3. With Flynn Downes being signed as a positional replacement for Mark Noble, I am confident that Jesse Lingard will be securing a permanent deal within a few days. Lingard can have his no. 11 squad number back if Nikola Vlasic is on his way out. I wouldn’t be surprised if one or both of the Watford players signed as well and there was talk of Burnley’s promising wide man Josh Brownhill, who did very well in a relegated team last season. Could be an interesting time before the Manchester City opening fixture.

  4. Interesting but still sparks questions over our remaining mf youths. If we do sign Downes + another will our current young m/f’s want to stay?

  5. Not forgetting the young Irish midfielder we signed from Colerain. Probably not ready for first team action just yet but would make Flynn Downes are second midfielder signing and fourth signing in total nether the less.
