The Hammers are tracking Fenerbahce star Attila Szalai, according to a new report.
The defender is in the Hungary squad for Euro 2020 and will be playing for his country in the group of death, which also includes world champions France, Euro 2016 winners Portugal, and Germany.
NTV Spor, via Sport Witness, claims that both Leicester and the Hammers are tracking Szalai, who plays primarily as a centre-back but is also capable of playing at left-back.
The 23-year-old only joined Fenerbahce from Cypriot side Apollon Limassol in January but it seems as though there will be serious interest in bringing him to England this summer.
Szalai is a left-footed centre-back, a rarity across Europe’s top leagues, and the Hammers are said to be keen to sign a defender of his profile.
We know that the Irons are certainly hoping to bring a centre-back in this summer, with Fabian Balbuena set to depart when his contract expires, and Szalai is likely to be tracked throughout this summer’s tournament.
Fenerbahce are not said to be willing to sell him on the cheap, and will instead be looking for a big bid, but that could be forthcoming if he enjoys a strong tournament with Hungary, particularly against such elite opposition in the group stages.
