Report: Irons still want PL skipper

West Ham are continuing to chase a deal to sign James Ward-Prowse from Southampton, according to The Daily Mirror.

We reported back in May that there is interest from the Hammers in securing the Saints skipper as Moyes bids to add quality and experience to his midfield.

And the Mirror claims that the deal is continuing to be considered by David Moyes.

Ward-Prowse has developed into one of the standout players in the Premier League outside of the top six and is a dead-ball specialist, with an enviable free-kick record.

He has also become a continued member of the England squad under Gareth Southgate, recently playing 90 minutes in the 0-0 Nations League draw with Italy.

He would cost an immense amount – there are some suggestions the fee would need to be in excess of £70m – but Moyes knows he needs to bring in midfield reinforcements.

Mark Noble has retired, Alex Kral is leaving and there are significant doubts over Tomas Soucek’s future.

The interest here is absolutely real but it remains to be seen if a deal can be done.

  1. If the interest was real we would have heard already of a bid going in, this is another smokescreen for a player that doesn’t want to leave his club, late in the window we will hear of a bid of £50 – £60m that was never made but sounds good and Southampton won’t deny it because it is good headlines for them as it was with Leeds last year when no bids were submitted.

  2. Good player. Probably the best free kick taker since Payet. Can’t see it happening though. Think he’ll stay at Southampton his whole career like Matt Letissier.
