The Brazil end of the match fixing and betting scandal has taken a twist with the  Senate Commission report released on Tuesday calling for criminal charges against Bruno Tolentino, Lucas Paquetá’s uncle and two Brazilian businessmen.

So reports The Sun in their on-line edition on 11 February entitled “FIX CLAIMS: Lucas Paqueta’s uncle facing SIX YEARS in jail if found guilty of match-fixing – as West Ham star awaits FA hearing”

The allegations against  Tolentino are that he paid another Brazilian player, Luis Henrique, to deliberately receive two yellow cards in La Liga games in 2023. Two payments of over £5000 were made after Henrique had been booked in two matches whilst playing for Real Betis, which started the investigation by the authorities.

The important point to stress for Claret and Hugh readers is that Lucas Paquetá, according to the report in The Sun, “gave evidence to the investigation, led by the Senate’s Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI), but is not facing any further action.

In Brazil, that is: Paquetá’s own English FA hearing to answer the charges against him of deliberately receiving yellow cards is due to begin in the summer. If found guilty, the Brazilian could be banned from competitive football for life. The FA statement said ‘Paqueta sought to receive a card to affect the betting market in order for one or more persons to profit from betting’.

Lucas Paquetá strenuously denies all of the allegations against him.

If there was any unequivocal evidence he would have been charged and sentenced by now. It’s a bit like VAR, if it takes this long it’s not clear and obvious so any hearing will have difficulty finding him guilty as charged and you would hope his legal representatives can caste enough doubt to have the case dismissed. The sooner it’s over the better so everyone can move on.

It’s looking more and more like the FA are saying 2+2=5.

    Paqueta has had yellow cards.

My concern is the English FA.

If they’re planning to hold the meeting in a Brewery, somehow, there won’t be any beer.
