In West Ham’s reduced financial circumstances, the search for attacking midfielders goes on with the club eager to sign a couple of new players and after yesterdays showing, the team is obviously crying out for an injection of pace and creativity in the final third. With a budget likely limited to £30 million West Ham’s recruitment team have their work cut out.
Many seasoned and cynical Hammers’ fans point to Josh Brownhill‘s continued availability making him an inevitable, nailed-on free transfer to West Ham ahead of the window closure: Another name has arisen this weekend that could help dispel Hammers’ fans worst fears. As footballfancast.com and others report today in their article:
“West Ham in talks to sign attacking midfielder” they highlight the availability of former Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini (29), available on a similar Sullivan-friendly free transfer, and they liken him to former Hammers favourite Manu Lanzini in terms of the impact he could have at London Stadium. Suggesting that talks have already taken place, the outlet describes Pellegrini as an alternative to Southampton’s £30 million plus Mateus Fernandes:
“West Ham are now locked in negotiations with AS Roma star Lorenzo Pellegrini over a standout free transfer taking place…Pellegrini could even go on to be Potter’s own iteration of Manuel Lanzini, with the Roma number seven hopeful he can be as impactful as his fellow Argentine compatriot if a move to England does get off the ground.”

Lanzini 2.0- Lorenzo Pellegrini
Wages are likely to be high and will depend on the Irons shipping out Guido Rodriguez to balance the wage books: Certainly a Rodriguez-upgrade and a more attacking option to boot, Pellegrini would offer a short term fix on a budget allowing the Irons to bring in a low-cost midfield improvement. And as we know, David Sullivan does love those free deals….
Maybe both! Pellegrini and Brownhill in for JWP and Rodriguez on loan deals ‘out’ next week then? Just joking. Honest.
From his YouTube looks worse than Rodriguez, if he can’t hack it in Italy which is a lot slower paced then not sure what miracle we would be hoping for with him.
This guy has reoccurring set backs throughout his career..
May 2025 had major surgery which resulted in a 4 month recovery.
Yet another dubious freebie.
Dismiss his high wages and offer him same conditions as Wilson, if Sullivan continues with ‘I know best’.
Another Sullivan humdinger he loves a freebie.
This guy is versatile with a reasonable goal scoring history.
Why are his club willing to let him go on a freebie when he still has a year on his contract?
They want his high wages off their outgoings.
He was injured in May.
Season 24/25 his goal tally dried up to TWO weak goals and TWO assists
Approaching whu favourite age_30 years not good for reducing overall age.
Stick to a meagre £15m and sign Gueye.
If this guy is 90% what Manu was to us, then pay him the dough and enjoy the show. Lanzini was the most unassuming player in West Hams history and for me a legend of our club. He orchestrated our tempo, without him – we have never been the same! Quite simply;
THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN
Ooh Martin, you little stirrer you (re Brownhill) 😉!! I don’t know much about Pellegrini tbh but I hear his wages are extortionately high, so that could be a challenge. Fernandes would be a good addition if we can do a Hermansen.
So his wages, around six million and him wanting a three year contract are Sullivan friendly? Again another player who would shoot into the top three of wages in our current squad.
