Newcastle are set to sign defender Matthew Bondswell following his exit from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig despite interest from West Ham, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Bondswell, who worked his way through the Nottingham Forest academy, spent two-and-a-half years in Germany and is now poised to return to England.
The Telegraph reports that the Irons were interested in doing a deal for the England U18 international.
But the left back is set to link up with Newcastle’s U23 squad following his Leipzig exit.
Bondswell is an interesting prospect and he has also been scouted by Chelsea; the teen represented his county at 200 metres during his school days and was also an accomplished triple jumper.
The pacey left-back will hope to prove his worth at Newcastle and eventually make is way into the first-team, with Steve Bruce’s side beating off competition from the Hammers and various other clubs to take him to St James’ Park.
