Report: Rice faces career dilemma

Declan Rice is set to decide whether he will push for a move to Chelsea in an effort to force West Ham into selling him, claims a report by the Independent

Transfer speculation has been rife over the summer that Rice is Chelsea’s last transfer target of the window with rumours of an incoming bid of up to £65m.

The club and David Moyes insist the player is not for sale and no bids or enquires have been received to date.

The manager has repeatedly said it would need a Bank of England offer to break his resolve with some suggesting an £80m bid would be too big to turn down.

Chelsea have spent £200m summer in the market after Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz and Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell joined Hakim Ziyech of Ajax and Timo Werner of RB Leipzig.  They are set to spend another £28m on keeper Edouard Mendy but a deal for Rice would take their spending beyond £300m.

Rice’s only option may be to submit a formal transfer request to force a move to Chelsea with people close to him claiming he will not.

That leaves the deal at a major impasse.

  1. Can’t see a bid coming from Chelski unless they offload some players, they have spent a small fortune already and have an abundance of central midfielders, Kovacic, Jorginho, Kante, Loftus-Cheek etc if they are insistent it’s as a defender then Rice would probably have to think about his England career he plays central defensive midfield… would Southgate pick him as a defender and play him in a position he is not playing for his club ?

  2. Would not sell to Chelsea under any circumstances.Neither do i think Declan Rice wiil do that in any case.

  3. All well and good getting £80 million – but does anyone trust this board to be able to spend it properly? We can’t even spend the money we have now on the one or two defenders we need – god knows how we’d do investing in 5 or 6.

We need to take a pragmatic approach to Rice – give us another season or two and he can go with our blessing. He’s too good for this shambles of a club and he probably wants to test himself against the best in Europe. I’m afraid we’ll always be a selling club unless players can see we’re going somewhere, which we aren’t (other than another relegation battle).

The thing I want to see is a Director of Football (with a proven track record) in place before we sell Rice, because god help us if Sullivan gets his hands on £80m to spend. A Director of Football in place asap to work with Moyes, work out what he wants, how the team plays, characters in the dressing room and choosing players based on that approach.

It’ll be a sad day when Rice leaves, but reinvesting that money properly will help to ease the pain. Wasting it will just add fuel to the already burning GSBOut fire that is currently raging and shows no sign of stopping.

  4. Declan should leave and who would blame him why stay at a club with zero ambition his better than that I for sure wouldn’t blame him until these parasites sell up nothing will change the clubs a shambles under Sullivan and Gold

  5. I am getting fed up of this speculation. I suppose that is the down side of 24 hour social media. Anyway, I hope he stays and we try and build a team around him. If he decides to leave, then we have some money to buy 2 maybe 3 decent players.

  6. The good old Independent – anything to add spoonfed stories to their paper. Great way for Chelski to try and unsettle DR and all clubs play these games of course…but no way would he be handing in a transfer request unless he gets pushed out by the owners. It wouldn’t have surprised me if the owners had accepted a rediculous offer, just like they did with Marko and Payet – but if we were to sell than it would have to be 100 mil at least. I would actually back that sale! t’s certainly a test of the owners resolve whilst these stories are making the rounds. He will be a WHU player for this season without doubt.

  7. They will sell Declan amid the takeover talk and pocket an extra £60-70 million on top of the sale price, Moyes wont get any of it, you wait and see.
Hope I am wrong but Sullivan is a shrewd snake of a businessman and will squeeze every penny he can from the Club just before he sells.

  8. Was going to post a comment – but JB15 has already said it !
We are a laughing stock and will continue to be so under the current regime- very sad 🙁👎

  9. Could anyone blame him if he did ask to leave. He is hands down one of our best players yet he is still on less than most squad players that never get a game.
Think about it, you can go to another club and pick up 4 times what he is being payed now and get the challenge of actually getting to challenge for trophies including the champions league. If we do keep him it will be his last year in claret and blue.
Being honest the only reason he is still here is that he is cut from a different mound to the mercenary modern footballer.

  10. In other news, it has been reported that Karren Brady has be betrothed to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Neither the Chairman or the Sussexes would respond to requests for comment.

  11. Tarkowski apparently would consider joining us to increase his chance of being selected for England – Declan is already selected – so the main career choice would be to play Champions League – I think his time for that will come – so let him stay for 1 or 2 more seasons – become the regular captain which will stand him in good stead

I still think that we should say no to Chelsea even if they offer 100 million – it would be difficult to buy players in the short time left in the window and then we would face a real threat of relegation

  12. Was it not the Independent who said 2 days ago the Tarkowski deal was almost done.?.About as reliable as Del Boys reliant pardon the pun.

  13. If Declan Rice is sold this summer the board better hope for the rapture because it might just be the end.

  14. Let’s face it, if Declan was a Player in a Spanish or Italian side, you would be talking massive amounts of money to sign him. If the Board is that hard up, they should grab the Takeover Offer and then see if his value isn’t in six figures.
