Report: West Ham move for Ajax star

The Dutch Daily Telegraaf are claiming that West Ham has made their move to sign Ajax defender Joel Veltman.

The 27-year-old is under contract with Ajax until 2020 and was restricted to just 14 matches in all competitions for Ajax.

The Telegraaf also published quotes from Veltman confirming he’s happy to leave Ajax this summer:

“I am open to a transfer. I am now 27, I have a one-year contract after this and this is a good moment in itself. There is certainly some interest, but not really concrete yet.

My matches in the Champions League last season have been a good calling card. I showed that after my injury I can take that level again. I am in top shape and have never been as strong as now. Fortunately, I was able to show that in those competitions.”

Claret and Hugh says:

It is difficult to believe this report when a striker or two has to be the main priority this summer with limited funds available. Manuel Pellegrini seems happy with the right-back position with Ryan Fredericks earning the number one spot and Pablo Zabaeleta signing a one-year extension as back. We also have the talented Ben Johnson waiting in the wings who made his debut last season for the first team and has been included in the pre-season tours of Switzerland/Austria and China. Although he could only be valued about £10m it money that would be put to better use in for a striker.

We are going to give this one a low rumour rater suggesting that agents see West Ham as a soft target to be linked to to tour their client’s availability. Watch out for our exclusive rumoir rating feture on the remainder of the window speculations.
