West Ham had a scout in attendance as Porto beat Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese Cup earlier this week, with Rodrigo Battaglia the likely object of attention.
Portuguese media reported that the 26-year-old midfielder was a target for the Hammers in the last transfer window, with Sporting placing a €30 million price on his head.
And O Jogo say the Irons had a scout in Portugal watching as the combative Argentine played 87 minutes in his side’s 1-0 defeat.
West Brom were also interested at the turn of the year, while the latest report claims that clubs such as Manchester United, Spurs and Liverpool also had scouts in attendance.
Battaglia can play in central and defensive midfield, and has not missed a single game for Sporting in the Portuguese top-flight this season.
He has registered one goal and one assist thus far, with Sporting losing just once. They are currently third, level on points with Benfica and two behind unbeaten Porto.
Summer target William Carvalho was unfit to play in the Cup encounter and should the Hammers again become involved in negotiations for the player it could open a second interesting ‘soap opera’ between the two clubs following their interest in him in the summer.
