Rethink Forced by Fullkrug’s Long Road To Fitness

However much West Ham dress it up as a ‘plan’ for Niclas Fullkrug‘s return to action, the early injury of their ‘Antonio upgrade’ is both intensely embarrassing and costly. We are told “The situation isn’t great and has led to a ‘consultation’ with West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui and a new plan has been drawn up. Füllkrug will now be ‘slowly introduced’ to the team and a ‘maximum load’ over 90 minutes.” (C and H yesterday)

Which means ‘ wrap him in cotton wool and bring him back real slow’.

Hardly confidence-inspiring and when he does appear, will make him a target for any decent centre-half who will want to test out his opponent’s fitness in the time honoured tradition.

It also means West Ham are in a changing and challenging position regarding a January acquisition. Having sent very clear messages in August that Fullkrug was the next best thing for West Ham, suddenly we hear “never say never” from the club over the possibility of a new acquisition in January. Funds from Nayef Aguerd’s sale ( they love him on loan at Real Sociedad ) could easily pave the way for a new striker: Antonio or Ings leaving will pay the wages.

Rumours now linking The Hammers with another forward circulate regularly. Sorloth? too slow. Failed at ‘Palace. A host of others have been linked:  Hugo Duro from Valencia,  Omar Marmoush from the Bundesliga-  former Newcastle striker  – Ayose Perez, too old at 31.

The irony of Deniz Undav – a Brighton ‘failure’ at just 28 sold to Stuttgart this summer and now replacing Fullkrug in the national side -and scoring twice on Friday – is not lost. Similar price to Fullkrug,  €26 million – but younger legs and fewer injury issues over time. We all know that West Ham need a twenty-something striker. This is becoming a ‘non-negotiable’ rather than a ‘possible’, however much the club play it down: The urgent need to bring in a younger, faster option is becoming crystal clear.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

That is one way of making it appear as though I am the errant one, but the fact remains It is just as easy to get it right, if you care. It just gets old having to fact check every story simply because accuracy is not a priority.

Niclas Fullkrug will prove to be the greatest German import in Premier League history.

What is intensely embarrassing and annoying to your readers is that none of you can tell the truth. In an earlier article Martin, you stated that FullKrug had played 63 minutes across 4 games before picking up his injury. In reality he played 83 minutes over 3 games, not hard to verify. Then after his return to the UK for treatment we have had one story after another, apparently trying to disguise the extent of his injury or the incompetence of the medical staff. At age 31 and on a 4 year contract, do we have a potentially successful striker dealing with a serious injury, or Danny Ings MkII? All this talk about wrapping him in cotton wool and phasing his re-introduction, is not encouraging. So far he is more of a basket case than the guy he was bought to replace.

You’ll see I quoted from the report. 63 minutes. In the report. I am sorry you are so upset by the inaccuracy!
