Following Luis Guilherme’s transfer to Sporting CP, the actual transfer fee has sparked curiosity from many supporters.
West Ham, according to a number of reports, agreed a transfer with Palmeiras for £19.2m — made up of a £14.2m fee with £5m of performance-related add-ons which presumably were not triggered?
The Brazilian club had a 20% sell-on clause, so they would have been eligible for a share if the Hammers had sold at a profit, yet this was not the case.
Fabrizio Romano reported that West Ham had secured a fee of €17m (£14.81m) from Sporting CP, yet it is believed that only £12.2m of this is a fixed fee, with an additional £2.61m made up of various performance-related bonuses.
Sell-On Clause Mystery and a Familiar Mistake
His new club view the young Brazilian as a high-upside talent and have set a staggering release clause of £87m.
West Ham insisted on a sell-on clause being inserted into the agreement, yet the exact percentage has not been disclosed.
This is a form of insurance, yet the club have fallen foul of this before. When selling Felipe Anderson, West Ham inserted a 50% sell-on clause when they offloaded him for a knockdown price of £2.3m–£3m to Lazio, despite having paid £42m (including add-ons). The clause ultimately made no difference, as Anderson ran down his contract, left on a free, and went on to join Palmeiras.
It’s fair to say both Lazio and Palmeiras have benefited rather nicely from West Ham over the years!
Guilherme will always remain a mystery at West Ham — he only played 17 times for the first team, for a total of just 260 minutes, and didn’t register an assist. He did clock up a solitary appearance in the Premier League International Cup for the Under-21s against Benfica in late 2024, where he scored a goal that won him the club’s September Goal of the Month award.
In Brazil, he featured 45 times, scoring once and assisting once.
All eyes will now be on him at his new club. Having been overlooked by three managers at West Ham, it will be interesting to see how his career progresses under Rui Borges in the Primeira Liga.

Aren’t the sell-on course only applicable on the profit made on the sales of the player to thei next club? When we sold him to Sporting CP, did we made a profit ?
If he is worth $89mil to CP, why are we letting him go at such low selling and not loan him and see how he perform in another less demanding league?
Seems like a bad football decision.
Thanks for all your comments- I have amended this as you are right the sell on clause is only relevant if we had sold at a profit!
The fact that they’ve slapped a release clause of 87M on him straight away goes to show they’ve just got an amazing deal. For the sake of a measly 12M it’s not really worth selling him. There’s plenty of other players I’d rather we got rid of instead of him. I have a feeling well be regretting letting him go.
Why would West Ham have “actually paid Palmeiras £19.2m — made up of a £14.2m fee with £5m of performance-related add-ons”, if those add-ons were, presumably, not triggered?
Surely the sell-on fee would be on profit only?
Guilherme will be on the books at about £13m after amortisation if he was bought for £19.2m.
So the figures look what they should be if we’ve got £12.2m as a fixed fee plus £2.61m performance related bonuses which are usually only part paid.
Less £2.44m to Palmeiras I suspect may not be the case as that’s usually paid only if you’ve sold at a mark up which we haven’t.
I’d say that it looks like we’ve about broken even with the loss as always in the fact that he has not performed, we buy too many players who do not perform but rarely lose on them due to amortisation.
These things cannot be considered without amortisation which is the case with all players that a fee has been paid for.
In my opinion we should have kept Gulhimere
We have got a poor price for him and should have loaned him not sold him
I am ver fearful that Sterling is going to end up here which would be a disaster, have Fulham decided they do not want him now??
Would rather spend the money on defenders
Steidten signing Guilherme ( 19,000,000 )meant that Westham didn’t have enough money to sign potential first team match winner Duran and therefore was a mistake regardless of what Guilherme’s potential was . The entirety of Guilherme’s time at the club just highlights how disorganized Westham are with virtually no football being played by him in 18 months . Westham have no internal infrastructure between an old guy of 76 years old ( Sullivan ) and the ream . This is why Westham are in such horrible trouble and can only survive if this issue is properly addressed .
Are we sure the ‘sell-on’ applies to the fee achieved rather than a percentage of any profit,
which would be more normal ?. If the latter presumably there’s nothing to pay Palmeiras ?
Isn’t the sell on figures from profit over the original amount.
