Rice benched for England

|

Hammer Declan Rice found himself on the England bench tonight despite suffering from a virus.

The West Ham defensive midfielder pulled out of England training yesterday after feeling unwell but manager Gareth Southgate decided he was well enough to make the England bench tonight.

Spurs midfielder Harry Winks has been drafted in for cover for a sick Rice.

England played Bulgaria at the Vasil Levski National Stadium in the Euro 2020 qualifiers this evening winning convincingly six-nil.

The game had been temporarily suspended several times after Raheem Sterling and Tyrone Mings were subjected to vile racist abuse and Nazi salutes from local Bulgaria supporters.

Declan Rice was an unused substitute which hopefully increases his chances of being fit enough for West Ham’s trip to Everton on Saturday lunchtime.

His first call-up for England duly came in March 2019, when Gareth Southgate had seen his form with the Hammers and selected him for the start of the EURO 2020 qualifying campaign. He has earned six England caps to date.
