For weeks West Ham fans have read endless reports from various in the knows – typically Fabrizio Romano – claiming the Red Devils were planning to bid for Mateus Fernandes:At first, sixty million was suggested but with each week the figure has grown higher as reported interest from elsewhere in the Premier League and beyond has grown.
West Ham’s £80 million asking price is now looking entirely reasonable.
However, latest suggestions will have Hammers’ fans heads in their hands once again at the prospect of north London neighbours Tottenham getting serious about the Portuguese midfielder’s signature.
Goal.com this afternoon claim “Tottenham near Mateus Fernandes agreement as London side move to beat Manchester United to signing”:
“According to transfer expert Matteo Moretto, the club is now “very close” to agreeing personal terms with the 21-year-old midfielder, who is widely considered one of the brightest young talents in the Premier League despite West Ham’s recent struggles.
While Manchester United have long identified Fernandes as a priority target, Tottenham have moved aggressively to steal a march on their rivals”
Which strikes me as so much hot air. (Being polite!)
Manchester United, Paris St Germain or … Spuds. As if.
Anyone can agree personal terms with a player’s agent: Coming up with £80 million is another matter altogether and in any case, you’d have to question the sanity of a twice-relegated player consciously choosing to move to the almost relegated Tottenham Hotspur when Manchester United are knocking the door down.
Fernandes will likely have the pick of the cream of European football and neither you, dear reader, nor I, nor Fernandes, nor his agent, would classify Tottenham Hotspur in that category.
I would love to think the club could convince him to stay. It would be a massive statement of intent (but I’m also a realist).
I feared a Leicester type implosion when we were relegated with Sully at the helm but with the noises coming from the club, and Křetínský in particular, I’m hoping that the club can finally start to fulfil the huge potential it has.
I’d love it for my Dad, who was born a stones throw from the ground, he deserves to see the teams success (as do all long suffering fans).
If West Ham are to fulfill this potential we have to stop being a selling club, and to stop being as seen as a stepping stone to bigger things (we must be the bigger thing). It seems with our new CEO that this might finally start to be the case.

Possibly it’s a step too far this season, but if no buying club is prepared to meet the valuation they should be politely told to “do one and jog on”.
A reset season in the Championship (which is no foregone conclusion). Then an assault on the EPL the next.
We spent much of last season competing with one of the “big 6” for the last relegation spot.

Would rather he did not go to Spurs, but whoever buys him are not going to get him on the cheap. If you want him that much Spurs it is £80-85 million.
Yes you might want to rebuild your squad, but if you want quality you are going to have to pay for it. We are not going to drop our valuation to suit your budget.
We need money to get new players in as well.

Martin Spurs maybe interested but I think that’s as far as it will go. Finding £80 million plus proberal add ons is the first stumbling block. There is ofcourse the problem of persuading the player he will not be in another relegated side. He must be thinking Man Utd would be a better choice.
Spurs will be relegated next season and we will take their place in the premier league 🤣
