Romano: West Ham Advanced Talks for Transfer Target

Football ITK Fabrizio Romano has provided his latest update—and it sounds like West Ham could be closing in on our next signing.

The Italian journalist was discussing Stoke City keeper Viktor Johansson, who had been linked with the Hammers. However, he ended his update with a more telling statement: “West Ham considered move but now in advanced talks for Botafogo’s John Victor, as exclusively revealed.”

It now appears that John Victor has surged to the top of West Ham’s goalkeeper shortlist—despite most sources previously suggesting that Mads Hermansen was the club’s first choice.

The Irons also seem to be out of the running for Parma’s highly-rated stopper Zion Suzuki, much to the disappointment of many fans who considered him the most exciting option.

As a result, West Ham have turned their focus elsewhere—and the offer for John Victor is said to be in the region of £9.5 million.

The 29-year-old featured in last month’s Club World Cup and has just one year remaining on his current contract with Botafogo.

With the transfer clock ticking and Alphonse Areola still causing concern, it would be a huge surprise if the club didn’t sign a new keeper THIS week.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

Started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

Give West Ham opinions on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

Keleher went for £12.5m and yet here we are. Unbelievable mess uo considering it was obvious we need a keeper for the past 2 seasons

I just don’t understand this signing (or attempt to) at all.

Admittedly wasn’t familiar with him so had done some searches on him. He’s 29 and was on the books at Santos since 2011. Despite that, he only made his professional debut less than 5 years ago and not even a year after debuting got crocked for over 120 days and is regularly suffering from minor niggles or outright injuries.

He’s also only now made himself a starting keeper.

Aging, cheap, injury prone and apparently viewed as a risky player between the sticks and hasn’t been viewed as sound choice as a first choice keeper by any club until his current one so sounds like he has all the qualities required for us…

  • Martin61 says:

In 9yrs of senior football he has played 89 games, as already said let’s hope he is a late developer and not Roberto MK2.

  • Geoff L says:

Not surprised, typical signing. Just waiting for us to sign Glenn Murray now as another forward. Perhaps we can get the average age of the team above 32 if we try.

  • Jonno says:

Hermansen is the only option if available at £20m/25m then we should do the deal.He could be our first choice for many years. If we keep signing has beens and freebies we will be relegated!!!

  • Hammeroo says:

If Sullivan is so intent on the cheapest option at the risk of signing an inferior keeper then why did we let Fabianski go? He is well capable of doing a decent job.

  • Timbo says:

Can’t say I know much about Victor but the stats indicate that at the age of 29 he has just had his first season as a first choice in the Brazilian league and was bought for about £1.5m a year ago. Late developer?!

  • mark wiggins says:

He looks crap , cheap so a Sullivan signing , we should go for Hermansen a better keeper.

  • Mick bering says:

This keeper will be third choice Far below class of our two keepers we have and that is WORRYING If this is the choice of our manager or new goalkeeping coach WELL GOD HELP US IF ITS THE CHOICE OF SULLIVAN THATS SAYS IT ALL Dont do this we will soon come to regret it HERMANSEN SHOULD BE OUR MAN WE SHOULD BE TARGETING WE ARE W HAM NOT A THIRD DIVISION OUTFIT NOT YET ANYWAY

  • Ian says:

Another player only wanted by the egomaniac

  • Rob G says:

having watched clips of all the suggested keepers, I haven’t seen one of them catch the ball. They all seem to just palm it away, sometimes into dangerous areas where the opposition could quite easily pounce on the rebound.

    • Gonzo says:

A bit of a pet hate of mine actually Rob. I know the modern balls move around a lot but so few keepers catch the ball now.

Contrast that to cricketers who seem able to catch a rock hard ball travelling at 90mph with one hand whilst diving.

      • Hammeroo says:

Perhaps we should be checking out some of our better Aussie cricketers in that case. Don’t wait until the Ashes start over here in Perth!

        • Julian Woodhouse says:

He would be a mistake imo, but costs the least of the 3. Hermansen would be my choice, was a shining light in a poor Leicester team last season but Sullivan only wants that which costs nothing or very little. You know what they say if you pay peanuts.

        • Benny the Aussie says:

Another Perth Aussie same here lol.

      • Prezza says:

Not the English ones in the last test match though !! ☺️
