West Ham Snub Monaco Loan Offer for Edson Alvarez

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that West Ham have rejected a loan proposal from Monaco for midfielder Edson Alvarez. The Italian ITK shared the news on his social media platforms earlier today.

The Hammers are keen to generate funds for a squad rebuild, a priority heightened by the long-term injury to striker Niclas Füllkrug, as reported by Claret & Hugh.

However, Romano clarified that Monaco’s approach was limited to a loan deal, which holds little appeal for West Ham.

The Mexican international nearly left the club before the current season began, with Manchester United rumoured to have tabled a Ā£60 million offer. However, Alvarez sustained an injury during a Copa AmĆ©rica match against Jamaica, which ruled him out of the season’s start and scuppered the potential move.

Since returning to fitness, Alvarez has struggled to replicate last season’s form but has only played once under new manager Graham Potter.

Romano wrote:
“AS Monaco have submitted an initial bid for Edson Alvarez. Loan proposal has been rejected by West Ham. Talks continue as Monaco want Alvarez and can offer UCL football, but it’s not easy as West Ham still consider the Mexican midfielder an important player.”

On the evidence of the Villa game, I doubt Potter will be willing to let Alvarez go for any fee, let alone a rental. Potters’ teams historically rely on a solid holding DM and Alvarez is more than capable.
Also, I believe it’s a bit unfair to judge any of the players based on this season under Lopetegui.

He may have worked speedily John ( a purchase every 8 1/2 days ) but Steidten was not so successful , do you think? with possibly a50% success rate , in terms of players performances so far . There is far more to it than the obvious , but that applies to all knee reactions.

If there was a loan with an obligation to buy for a significant fee, that might be worth it. We’d be able to spend against that incoming fee.

But just a straight loan surely does us no favours.

Whatever happens, the board are going to have to release up funds because we’ve now lost three of our key central strikers.

Need the cash for a pacey youngish striker and box to box midfielder

I seem to remember Alvarez was bought as a defensive midfielder to replace Rice. Let’s be honest Alvarez and Souchek is not a patch on Rice and Souchek but probably our best choice partnership for the midfield right now.

I don’t really get why anyone would think that we’d be interested in a loan. Having spent so much in the last window and needing to spend more now it’s obvious that we might be tempted to sell but what planet is anyone on thinking we’re likely to loan ?

Hopefully left back Scarles has taken pressure of this position (Emerson to return?)
Potter appears to want minimum of 3 players.
C/bk (recall Aguerd who is now fitter?), x1 midfield and all important striker who is presently scoring and not aged.
Problem needs to sell to make space in squad, conjure up funds and time. When have whu ever moved speedily?
It’s make up your mind up time, proto.

    • John Ayris says:

We do move speedily, Steidten brought a player in every eight and a half days during the last window, while dealing with outgoings as well. That’s not hanging about.
